Mine are always bought from someone else:o. That's the problem with living outside of North America. I wish I could go catch my own!

I have a few from shops and a few from other Garter keepers.

I got mine from two local stores and I doubt you'd find the information about the stores very useful. :) One of the snakes was bred in Sweden and the other either in Sweden or Central/Western Europe.

James, don't complain. At least you can catch your own grass snakes legally. ;)

That's true. Actually, I got a little paranoid about that (especially as I seem to be so out of touch with taxonomy:rolleyes: ). So I checked to make sure I'm still within the law, thankfully I am.

Off topic again, but as far as I can tell, keeping native species doesn't require a permit here, but catching and keeping wildcaught specimen does. I'm going to ask the guy who had the Coronella for sale and hear what he has to say.

i am not sure about wild caught species here but i don't think it matters cause the common garter is litteraly what the name implies common...but the snake i caught i got him in a special trip to a white water river in wisconsin and i called him rico and braught him home now he lives in my room!!! =) as a little off topic i take rico every where car trips, walks, bike rides, and some times we go to petco to pick out toys for him ! =)

05-07-2007, 03:43 PM
You lost me there garterman! What kind of toys does he choose?

It might be a silly question....but I was looking back through some of your earlier posts....Does Rico have a vivarium? Or is he loose in your room?

Having no garters native to the UK, mine are from various breeders or petshops, some of whom are on this site!

Chris, You know it's not such a good idea to carry your snake around with you, don't you? He needs a controlled environment, temperature, humidity, hides etc. etc.

garterman07
05-07-2007, 03:46 PM
Wow Crazyhedgehog, Your loaded. I would love to see you make a thread with all the pics of your snakes. That would be killer!!!

Whoa! CrazyHedghog, you've got a lot of snakes! I can't believe you named one after your hubby!

Stefan-A
05-07-2007, 03:49 PM
Chris, even short trips are very stressful for these animals and there's always the risk that he might get hurt by accident. Don't take him on excursions if you want him to stay healthy and, well, alive.

adamanteus
05-07-2007, 03:51 PM
Chris, do you have a viv for your snake?

garterman07
05-07-2007, 03:52 PM
are there any recomendations that you would make to help me keep him safe cause i love takin him on walks with me. he seemed to like it cause he would coil around my arm and sit there while i walked with or he would wrap around my neck and hang out there while i go walking.

garterman07
05-07-2007, 03:53 PM
i do not believe so but i can get a pic of him to put on here. (last time i took a picture of him he tweaked out and ran under the bed for an hour he hates flashes)

adamanteus
05-07-2007, 03:54 PM
My personal recommendation would be that you don't take him for walks at all. Others may disagree. He has a viv though, right?

garterman07
05-07-2007, 03:55 PM
what do u mean by a viv...not sure i know what that means...

adamanteus
05-07-2007, 03:57 PM
A tank, cage, vivarium?

garterman07
05-07-2007, 03:58 PM
yes i have a tank for him hes in a 20 long and i use the same substrate as my tarantulas reptibark its soft and contains no cedar because tis poisonous for animals of his stature.

i gotta run for about 30 minutes but i be back on though! sorry m8s

Do you have a scanner? I have one (may or may not be hooked up though) and when it prints them it looks pretty good, and the ones at school copy good too, doesn't even pixelate it much.

Chris,

As much as I dislike discouraging people from bonding with their pets, James is telling the truth about carrying your garter around. There are a lot of variables that can't be controlled when you're outside in public. For example, a car could drive by and reflect the sun (similar to a flash camera), and your snake could take a dive off your shoulder, neck, wrist, etc. and break a rib, dive under someone's foot as they're walking, or escape. There are a million other scenarios, not to mention the risk of a dog at Petco getting him or the dangers of sudden temperature changes. It's really better for your snake to remain in a more secure setting with only limited trips outside. Sorry to be the bearer of such disappointing news,

Rick

P.S. I either bought my snakes online or bred them.

hmmm...got a bunch from Scott Felzer, some wild caught and traded for a few....and always looking for more to add!!!!!!

drache
05-08-2007, 08:07 AM
most of mine I got from Scott Felzer
and I got one from Tom, who's a member on this forum (snakeman)

it never occurred to me to take a garter for a walk
I've considered it with one of my kings, because he likes to hang out in my sleeve and one day he was there when it was time to pick up Mikhaila
I didn't though
I'm very protective of my animals and "out there" I just don't feel I have enough control
there's just too much that can happen
too many people who don't feel about animals the way I do
it's too scary

It doesn't feel like I have that many until I write them down.....

Believe me my collection is very small compared to some!
(and I have a 'wish list ' still!)
