The ones I got from you Shannon, even take an occasional slug when I offer it. They aren't picky at all. I can offer pinkies, fish of any kind, worms, or as I said, even a slug. They eat it all with equal enthusiasm.

Lol
I'll have to wait two months:(
That's when the reptile show comes
Ok, and how big males of this species can grow? I heard they are very calm. Can a such male become a companion for Kleo? I saw an offer of almost 1 year old male... Won't he try to mate with her?

Different sexed and species of Thamnophis should not be housed together.
At least not breeding age.
Yeah, I know, but I heard that ribbons are actually pretty hard to breed and they are different species, so I figured out that they won't do babies. :) :D
And besides, I'm sure, that with my luck, if I buy her a female companion, Kleo will turn to be a male! :D

I wouldn't count on that. Snakes of the same genus are able to interbreed.

You can't count on that. Putting them together runs the risk of breeding.
Both are Thamnophis.
It's too much of a risk in my opinion.;)
Aren't they supposed to mate after winter hibernation?
PS. I'm shedding (number of posts)! Lol, and I didn't even have a cloudy eyes!

Optimum breeding time is after brumation but they can breed at anytime of the year.
Well, maybe I'll just buy him and keep separate, how about that? ;) So, how big males can be?

They average, like, 20inches. Mine is 24inches (3 years old) that's bigger than average.
Little small in my opinion...

Little small in my opinion...
yea, they are. Especially compared to females. But, you're workin' with garter snakes. They're not a big species.
So I gotta find a female. I want something between Amon and Kleo. I like little snakes but Kleo I already got. ;)

They aren't LITTLE. They just aren't BIG.

lol
there the perfect size ;)
So are they big enough to dig in for instance an adult mouse or at least a hopper?
Starling96

a female might be able to out a small adult
a male would have a chance at a hopper
My 70 cm long Amon eats a hopper with ease; I'm asking because feeding a garter with tons of pinkies doesn't sound like a fun idea. Because I'm keeping Amon, I have adult mice and hoppers. It would be the best, that it would be able to eat Amon's sort of food.

Mama is one of the smallest species and eats large fuzzies, so I'm sure a marcianus could eat a hopper with ease.

They are?
i thouht they were one of the larger
Im pretty new to Thamnopis's :)
whats some of the largest?

Northwesterns stay around 2 ft or less. I think radix and marcianus are a couple of the largest, the giant garter snake (thamnophis gigas) is the biggest of them all. I think they're around 5 ft long.

Are thamnophis gigas a mexican species?

I think they are in California. I'm not 100% sure, though.

Yea i googled and man they're big
Yes Chantel, but I'm wondering if a male marcianus would be able to eat a hopper or adult mouse. It's obvious that females can do it, but males?

I don't know how big males get, I know for a fact my male northwestern can barely down a fuzzy... And all snakes are different. It would depend on the size :D
See how clever I am when I'm tired!

Maybe. Males are long and thin, so it wouldn't surprise me if he'd have difficulty. You have to keep in mind, though, what I only have a yearling male concinnus, an adult male northwestern (1 ft) and a baby male northwestern.

Males in general don't get big. But they're big enough.
