I love watching their colors really come out after they shed! Mine just shed a day or two ago, and she seems to be turning a sort of traffic cone orange all over except for the pattern on her back. he shed today!! He's less orange now, and more red.
It is unbelievably hard to capture the color of this snake.
If i use natural light it's OK, if i use bulb light, it's comes out weird. So i open a window and turn the rest out. Also, if i use flash it comes out to bright and orange, so some of these are accurate in color, but kinda dark.
This is a little too orange

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Thought it would be nice to see examples of all kinds of different snakes "before and after" as they color up, all in one place. Just never seemed to work out that way. Instead we have one or two examples, scattered everywhere in many different threads. It would be very nice to seem them all merged but that would take time and effort on the part of already "burned out" moderators.:o

Well, I know I'm not all that impressed by them but the mutation is a critical component for making snow red sides.

See!? That's what I meant. :D
ConcinusMan
07-16-2011, 07:06 PM
Well they do differ from other snakes in that they are truly in the purest sense, anerythristic. Meaning all areas that should be red lack any pigment at all.
It's a little different with "anery" radixes and concinnus. Those aren't a simple case of red areas lacking pigment especially if the radix wasn't red in the first place. Also, anery concinnus have pigment on every bit of their body, it just isn't red like it's supposed to be. That is not to say the red areas lack pigment. There is pigment. It's just not the "right" color.
I honestly believe that "anery" radixes are really a form of melanism expressed in a way that is similar to melanistic ordinoides. That may be true of "axanthic" radixes too. They aren't purely anery or axanthic. Not like anery red sides. Those are truly anery the purest sense, and nothing more, nothing less and that is why they produce such "clean" snows. There's only one place left, and one color to take away all pigment and amelanistic takes care of that to make a very clean snow.
Even snow radixes have one place on their body that there is pigment when they are born. On the side of the head. The pigment is there, but it's just a dash of white. It's a tiny area that is white, not "see through"

Well, anery red sideds can be bluish like the concinnus....
That's a little different. Blue pigment is present on a lot of normal looking concinnus'. It's just that it's masked by other pigment layers. Take away those pigments and the blue shows through. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's a different cause for the blue.
RedSidedSPR

The Conncinus is growing like a weed...so so much bigger than the flame and shedding far more often. I can't wait until the flame is bigger, the coloring will be so much more stunning on a bigger animal!

Now what did I tell you? 24-28 inches at 1yr (provided they are kept under "summer" conditions and fed well the entire year) is pretty much what they do. This is after all a snake that can reach nearly 4 feet and where they live, there's a lot of pressure to get big fast because everything from birds to bullfrogs are looking to have you for a snack. The solution is to get big enough to eat them instead, and do it fast. That concinnus will overtake the other snake(s) you have and will soon be way bigger than them.

RedSidedSPR

not a dumb question. $25 is a very cheap price for a snake... only normals will be that cheap from Scott. Others will sell $10 snakes. Theres no real price for a snake, people price them however. So I don't know how to answer that. There are very colorful snakes with red and stiff that are "normal", not a morph like a flame. They're not expensive.

Prices really vary, I paid MUCH less for my flame. It is the shipping costs that will get you (i.e. the shipping was almost twice the cost of the flame).
RedSided here is a pretty accurate depiction of the red color on my little guys head (the red looks a bit more solid and brighter to the eye). Parts of him are on FIRE while other parts are still ivory! Can't wait until he is bigger as then the colors will really show up (harder to see when they are still so tiny!).

If I had any left, I would sell my T.s. concinnus babies that low. I often sell two for 40 or 50 bucks. Maybe you should talk to Don Belnap. Garter Snake Forum - View Profile: ssssnakeluvr (http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/members/ssssnakeluvr.html)
index (http://www.donsgartersnakes.net/)
He bought a litter of 10 from me. Maybe he still has some.
I recently sold these two CB $40 for both. The thing that usually gets you is the additional cost of shipping. In the case of these two, the total cost was $75 shipped.

Or I could get you a WC, deworm it and make sure it's eating well. Even the WC ones make darn fine pets and do very well in captivity. I've had many over the years that are tame as heck and will carefully eat right from my fingers. My Big Bertha comes to mind. She's an old female nearly 4 feet long. She's a smart loving "puppy dog"
(this is just an example of a WC one)

Yeah well he is MUCH bigger already, he is over 12" and on a growth spurt, shedding every 2-3 weeks. The little flame used to be some what smaller but now the difference is huge. The accurate thermometer is 2.5 inches wide.

Oh lordy. Poor guy. Might as well stick your finger up his nose. Honestly, it doesn't take probing. If I said he was a male than that is what he most likely is. Now that he has some size on him you could post pics and ask the forum. Please don't put him through probing. It's really not necessary.
Well, you can expect the growth spurts like this to go on for a couple of years before a lull of about 4-5 months where things slow down before picking up gradually again. The only difference with females is after about the 2 year mark, growth continues at a slightly higher rate than males, and tops out at a bigger size.

Wow! I actually prefer Smoke, but Red is really coloring up nicely! Amazing for such a little guy!

I like Smokes look better than Reds too. He's my favorite of the two. There's just more change that happens with Red. He gets redder and redder, Smoke stays about the same, but he's my favorite looking.
