While on the forum I like check out the "Online Users"(left side of home page).
Clicking on that will expand your view to see what threads are being looked at.
One of the benefits is you get to see what the visitors are viewing. Many times these users are searching and viewing old threads that I would probably never see.
Many of those threads are years old and have not been posted to in a long time.
I've found most of these thread to be very enjoyable reading for educational purposes and some just for fun.
Here's my idea, if you find one of these treasures post a link to it so others can enjoy them.
I'll get things started:

Here's another good old thread.

http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/breeding/1558-can-you-cross-breed.html

From that thread is this post:

I am really new at this, but my "big eastern" had 42 babies and it seems none of them are exactly alike in coloration. They very from light, with distinct stripes and markings to almost no stripes and dark unmarked coloration with tan to gray underbellies. I had expected them to look like their mother, but not so. This is a WC snake, so at least in my area there is a wild variation in color and pattern, and you may be able to pick and choose within a species to get what you like. I personally am starting to like the darker stripeless variation.:D

Just in case anyone was wondering, that's just polymorphism.

I think he's under the wrong impression that by mixing the two subspecies you'd automatically get a mix of the colours. I know flames are codominant, but not sure what the blue in the Pugets are. You very likely could end up with a snake that looks nothing like either of the two and could look like a plain old garter snake. Mixing snakes is not like mixing paint. As has already been stated this really is a bad idea, and probably not only could you end up with very dull looking snakes, no one would probably buy them and it would mess up how the snakes are naturally.

Roy

True, very true. you only create a snake that is not nearly as beautiful as any one of the two purebreds would be. Case in point: take a beautiful checkered garter and breed it to a beautiful Oregon red spotted and you get this muddy offspring which are not nearly as nice as a pure checkered or pure concinnus:

http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/5817/concinnuscheckerdhybrid.jpg

Bottom line is that there is no good that can come of crossing them, and plenty of bad that can come of it.

I wouldn't blame you if you called me a lier, heck I can hardly believe this myself.

For the last 6 months I have been sleeping in the radixes nusery to keep an eye on the young ones. You know, taking care of bad dreams, getting drinks of water, bathroom runs. All the normal stuff.
Up until a month ago I was sleeping on a foldout camping cot and then can the 6 foot display case. Now there's no room for the cot and I've been sleeping on a self-inflating matt. At 6:04 I was sound asleep dreaming about catching radixes. In the dream, I was lying on the ground reaching in a log for a snake. I felt the snake crawling through my hand and I grabbed it. This is when I woke up and realized I had a snake in my hand. An unknown female radixes that had gotten into the house was in my hand. At first I thought and hoped it was my boy scar. He is the only missing snake at this time. I put my glasses on to see if the boy had come home only to find this new female. She didn't musk me or make a lot of effort to get away.
I've heard of Herping in your sleep before but this is something else. She'll be stayng with us as she is a gorgous dark phase with a knockout orange dorsal. I've got a male here that I haven't posted about yet. He's the blackest radix I've ever seen. Those to together should make for some beautiful babies.

Now, they're volunteering to be caught.
It can't get any better than this!

http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/thamphotos/data//500/medium/sleeping.jpg

You wouldn't? Thank goodness. I was worried about that.

Well, this old post of yours is amazing Steve, and I do believe it. Good thing you weren't dreaming about eating chocolate pudding.:p

I actually like the looks of those, and I would bet money that there are hybrid possibilities that COULD result in nice looking snakes. That said, I want to make it clear that I am not advocating hybridization in the Garter pet hobby.

I've seen highly questionable snakes before, especially out of Europe. One's that you couldn't quite be sure if they were red pugets, fitchi, oregon red spotted, or a mixture. They were pretty enough, but no more so than if they had been pure.
