Hello,

I am a long time garter keeper, love them, they are awesome pretty snakes and ACTIVE that's the best part. My corn snakes will just hide or just never move, my garters are like OH HAI!, let me introduce them

Frosty and Serpent (Reg and albino checkered), born Sept 09 same litter captive bred
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/40645_459014694358_525334358_6283656_6250465_n.jpg
Here is a better look at serpents pattern

and then there are these 3 clowns that I built a super enclosure for, lots of climbing space to avoid constant kerplunks. These 3 are wild caught as newborns, these 3 were about 5 inches upon capture

There is 2 year old Slider (eastern plains), got his name after being attacked by a cat and losing part of its tail and received gashes and punctures in its side
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/267851_10150301468209359_525334358_9225914_2181294 _n.jpg

1 year old Pepper (eastern plains), the king of his enclosure, owns the hide at the top corner of the enclosure looking upon everything that's below him
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/60577_471897729358_525334358_6605871_7342525_n.jpg

Then there is 4 year old Spot (red sided) got his name because he has 2 big black spots near his head and tail, my oldest garter but only about 18 inches long. This garter is very unique, super easy to handle, super active, comes to you when you open the lid, never musked unlike slider and pepper. Words really can't explain it but other garters would slip right out of your hands and potentially fall to the ground but this one will wrap itself around your fingers and loves to climb

Reviving this thread to show a new aquire I chosen

This one had a stunningly bright stripe compared to the other dozen I caught and then released. Even have a video on my phone of a big 3ft garter on the gravel road, possibly pregnant. tried striking at me after wiggling my finger, so I picked her up and put her in a safe place away from the road.

This is my new one, this one is super sweet, still a little bit skiddish and hasn't accepted a pinky yet, but I anticipate soon

I don't see a regular checkered. Only an albino checkered and a plains garter. Then a couple of easterns and a red sided. Good looking snakes you have.

Good looking snake.
Is that a scar on his back just down from his neck?

Looks suspiciously like scale rot.

Kantar
08-07-2011, 05:24 PM
shhhh :) don't tell her she isn't a checkered

The albino checkered garter that went up for sale is officially in my hands and mine now :) It's a possible female, a year old and a foot long. It lived in a rack its whole life so its very skiddish and frightened, hoping to tame her down alot.

I don't think its scalerot, no scales are deformed and he would have been dead by now. It hasn't spread and its been 3 years. Its just a blotch of a different color

Put pepper in with the new one, hopefully it helps the new one to relax a little bit, they are the same age and size

Now I just need to come up with a good name for an albino

this snake was a rack snake so this is the first days in a year it has been in permanent light with glass surroundings

Could very well be. You'll probably see a change soon.

RedSidedSPR

It's a natural camaflauge. Ive noticed it especially with green snakes. But garters do it too. When they start moving after not moving for awhile, they'll sometimes sway like that as a way to look inconspicuous... like if they were in a bush, with the wind moving it a little, if they're moving a little, they won't stand out as much.

My adult does it all the time when he starts moving after sticking his out of the hide for awhile.

Trust me, if anything, it's good.

kibakiba

My babies do that around new surroundings. When I put them outside for a little bit, they were bobbing their heads and swaying their heads while exploring. I used to think when Snakey acted like a stick and was bobbing his head, he was trying to act like a piece of grass, but it wasn't the case. I was told (by someone on this forum, who I consider knowledgeable) that they have bad perception, and bobbing their heads like that helps them figure out where things are... Something like that.

Should I be concerned if my new albino checkered sways its head side to side for like 5 seconds once in a while here and there?

Both my checkereds do that. They're just triangulating for depth perception. Google "motion parallax"

This one didn't end up passing my month test. He only ate a worm scented rat pinkie once and turned his head away from most food offered. Even though he was super friendly I had to let him go, obviously he thrived better in the wild

Darn, sucks when you have to do that with such a good looking snake. Been there, done that. Had to release the only intense blue northwestern I ever found and that was a lot of years, and a lot of snakes before I found it. He was a lifer but wouldn't eat and was thin and weak.:(
