Hi all!
New here! I'm trying to certify the sex of my checkered garter snake, which I was told was a male when I first got it (it was a rescue, so know very little of its background). I've had two friends, who are both clued up about what they're doing, try to probe it, but the snake clenches and fights like anything and neither of them were happy that they'd got the probe in properly, and didn't want to persist and risk hurting it. Does anyone know the subcaudal scale count for males and females of this species? I have a sneaky suspicion it may be a female...
Thanks!
Andi

To me, the difference between male and female is so obvious, I wouldn't need to probe or pop. Any chance we could get some clear pics of the underside. Include the last 1/3 of the snake all the way to tail tip. Checkered females are very, very easy to identify visually. Their tails are very short and taper very abruptly.

scale counts don't vary between sexes. good clear photos of the underside of the tail will work

I have yet to see an adult garter that needed probing to ID the sex... The difference between male and female are very obvious... As said, all we need are some photos!

They do on every concinnus' I've ever checked but that's beside the point. Even very young checkereds are easy to sex visually. Can be difficult with other species, but checkereds are really obvious.

Hope these are ok, not the best of cameras and trying to hold and photograph at the same time!

Haha! Sorry... Since I have been posting from my phone, it was not apparent to me that this post was not yet approved! There I fixed it :)

Yeah, see what I mean? It's obvious. No question that's a female.

I've had success poping mine and got 100% success without trying to squint and figure out if it tapers quickly or not.
But that's deff a female
