I was given several aquatic snails and was wondering can my checkered garter snake eat these? I'm tryin to keep her diet diverse. Thanks! :)

Sorry for the slow reply to you thread. ;)

One concern I would have would be possible parasites.
What are you feeding now?

Guidofatherof5 I am feeding mollies and platies with the occassional worm as a treat.

There's no reason to do snails, but they CAN eat them... just not the shell. I know people who do, but i don't know anything about it.

Some small snakes are able to work the snail out of the shell (fun to watch) but i don't know about garter snakes

If it were me I'd reduce the amount of fish and increase the amount of worms. Worms could easily be a staple food item rather than a treat.
Sliding in some mice would really round out that diet.
Might also be a good idea to use a suppliment once every few weeks.
Just my opinion.;)
Here's what I use:
Rep-Cal Ultra-Fine Calcium with Vitamin D3 - 4.1oz. (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?rlz=1T4SKPT_enUS421US421&q=rep-cal+calcium+with+vitamin+d3&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=3817686425388673074&sa=X&ei=PccVTrvHBIjZ0QG8kvFw&ved=0CFgQ8wIwAg)#

I've seen "Can-o-Snails" They are de-shelled. I've not used them and I'm not sure how great they are, but I've seen them at petco.

Been there, done that. 95% of my snake wouldn't eat them.
The other 5% tried but didn't take seconds.

Because they're snail specialists, in a way. Snap and Ember love snails, and so do a couple of my northwesterns. They're treats when they've been good (no musking, biting, hissing ,etc) They eat them faster than anything they've ever eaten.

yeah, i guess that's mostly northwesterns because that's their naturaly diet, and obviously, concinnus too....

Concinnus also love their fishies! Snap goes crazy if I'm eating salmon or tuna in my room. :D

Mine LOVE fish. :D
My adult will take almost nothing but live fish, my flame goes nuts for silversides (chopped) and my anery takes his guppies and silversides like there's no tomorrow! He's eat 100 if i didn't stop him!

Those snails in Petco aren't live, right? My guys won't take slugs and things of the like unless they are trying to crawl away!
