View Full Version : New Marcianus
Tomorrow I will (hopefully) be bringing home some checkereds! :D
I was browsing around, and came across some quite near to me, only about an hour away (which makes a change!) which are already feeding on pinkies, so it's too good to pass up. Most seem to be on f/t trout fillet, which is a road I wanted to avoid going down again, even if it were only temporary.
I'm going to see them in person tomorrow, so hopefully they'll be happy and healthy and I'll be able to bring some home.
They haven't been sexed yet, so that'll be the fun part, but I'm fairly confident in the knowledge I have collected from here. Whenever someone posts a picture for sexing on here, I seem to come to the same conclusion... hopefully I have learned well enough! Hoping to get girls again.
The big question now is - do I get 2 or 3? The double viv is 3" by 1 1/3" and would be fine for 3 babies, but I don't think enough for 3 full-grown girls?
The bottom tank is reserved for 2 melanistic sirtalis, but I do also have a large glass tank which I could seperate into if needs be.
And I could always up-size when they grow... :D

Glad to hear you found some snakes. Looking forward to seeing the new arrivals.
It's always a good feeling when guests are about to arrive.;)
I am sooooo excited! Tinged with a little sadness, of course, but yes - can't wait for my new guests!
I will post photos once they're here. :)

Can't wait to see the new squiggles!
Ok, here they are! Sorry about the picture quality, but my camera struggles with zooming enough.
Our two new handsome boys -
Ska (named by my husband):

He looks like Alice Cooper in that pic.
And Patton (named by myself):

A bit more body visible on this one of Patton, but the lighting sucks:

They're about a year and a half old, but pretty small (I've been so used to girls!).
They got settled in to their new home and chomped down a pinky each on first offer! It seems like moving house was no obstacle to their appetite. :D Happy little fatties is exactly what I want.

Anyone else notice the obvious? Those aren't checkereds. They're plains garters. Reminds me of a blog I saw a while back. Guy pictured a normal eastern and called it "Checkered plains garter" and I was like, "huh?"

I noticed.. but i kinda figured i was wrong... so i kept my mouth shut
Do you know what? I had actually been thinking that myself, and have been studying a few photos of the two to decide for sure. The yellow stripe and the patterning... And there was me, thinking it was just my inexperience.
But I trust your judgment, Richard - and I'm glad you mentioned it to confirm!
So, Steve - looks like I got some Radixes after all!
So, do radix males grow to be larger than checkereds? Anything I should know that's different in care?
I couldn't find anything specific in the species sheets.
Right then, better go change their 'title' everywhere... :D

Good for you.
The more radixes in the U.K. the better.
I think radix males grow to a similar size as Checkereds.
I haven't actually seen any radixes advertised anywhere yet, so I'm honoured. :D

In my opinion the finest garter snake you can have.
I am a little bias towards them though:D

Radix are taking over everywhere!!!
Nice two squiggies you have there! I have to ask, where does the name "Ska" come from?
Patton, I can only assume from the general or maybe something else?

I really do want one. I just don't have room yet to buy every snake i like :D
I know! I actually wanted to get checkereds, since my husband had really taken a fancy to them, and so far he hasn't had any say in snake choices. :o So when I saw them available, I jumped at the chance.
But he's totally happy that they're radix/plains. Who wouldn't want these guys?! I sent a message to the couple I got them from. They were really great, but not necessarily gerter specialists, so it was an easy enough mistake - especially if the breeder sold them as checkereds - which is more of a puzzle.
The name Ska came from Ska music, of which the checkerboard pattern was a heavily featured theme in that scene.
Patton is named for Mike Patton, musical genius, and long-time love of mine (in an admirational sense, of course). :D
