This is really annoying, and strange. I have 3 acres of woods, and lots more yard... but i can't find a single freaking worm!! I need them to feed to my babies! I search for an hour, and can't find anything! I went out, the night of a rain and nothing. It's frustrating cause they're supposed to be easy to find.

How do you guys find worms? Do you just lift suff, dig etc.? Or do you do something more??

Is there anything i can do, like set up something that "attracts" them??

It's probably the same reason most people find a bunch of garters, and i've only found 1 my whole life. SOMEONE hates me.:D

Try putting a rug or sheet of plywood on the ground in a shaded area.

I bought a worm farm kit for the kids, and it recommended jumping around on the ground, hitting the ground, or possibly playing music over a speaker on the ground, as it simulates the sound of rainfall - to which the worms (supposedly) should be attracted. It did say that you may then need to dig down a little and that you're more likely to find them at night.
I can't swear to the effectiveness of this, as I haven't tried it yet, but may be worth a try?

I read somewhere that Wood Turtles rock from side to side which causes the worms to come out.
Got any Wood Turtles?:D

there's plywood and logs etc out there (in shade) i put them there for finding snakes (it works too)..

Used to...

They don't sell those "white worms" you find anywhere do they?

It's so annoying because i used to see so many worms here, for YEARS, and than when i actually NEED THEM, none.

I've never seen them for sale.
They seem to be rather fragile and hard to keep. I can't get them to live in a bin.
The good thing is my snakes eat them fasted than I can catch and store them.

You can try soaking an area with the hose to see if any will come up.

Try some other locations. Other than the ones you've checked.
If you go out at night with a flashlight do you see any night crawlers out?

Same problem here (Georgia), I attributed it to the drought we are having. Just went out today to look for the first time in a week and nothing (it rained last night but apparently not much).

I'm a pro nightcrawler hunter! I don't bother finding worms during the day... they come out themselves at night! You need a really dim flashlight in order to be successful, or if you have a bright one, you can never shine the light directly on them because it scares them immediately. You also have to TIP TOE... if they feel you coming they will be gone before you ever see them. If they are not coming out at night, go outside around 7 and hose down your entire yard to get it wet. Wait until after 10 PM to go out... and the nightcrawlers should come out. Using these tips I can nab 8 dozen nightcrawlers in a very short time :)

Here's a tip for you that is garanteed to work, at least it always works for me.
Tip-toe over to the sporting goods department at Walmart, but make sure you bring $3.
The best time to see and collect lots of worms is in the early spring and fall right at sunrise after a night long of a steady cool rain.

ha ha.

I'm not really wanting to find big nightcrawlers like i buy AT WALMART (every week)

I want to find some i can give my babies.... without having to always chop nightcrawlers, because they don't seem to like those. but they love little earthworms. (especially the ones like Steve said, but i've only found two of those, but pf coures, they weren't in my yard)

I dig up an area that used to be my garden (now my husband throws the lawn cuttings in there) There are lots of baby worms for my Dekayi (cause he's got such a cute little head). I don't have a problem finding them there. Sometimes just digging up a random spot in your yard will yield you the worms you want but you have to dig for the baby ones (that's been my experience)

When I needed them for fishing I usually just dug up a patch of dirt near the house with a round head shovel. That generally worked. then again there could be climate differences. I also find them a lot under rocks in the garden.

Didn't you just tell me that it hasn't rained in a while? Well there ya go. Of course you're not going to find any worms.

Steve, my area is loaded with big night crawlers, even my own backyard lawn, but you don't find them that way unless it happens to be late winter/early spring, in the 50's at night, and pouring rain. For several days, until the ground is saturated, that is. And even then, the window for "night crawling" is only 2 or 3 weeks out of the year. At least that's how it is around here.

It's likely he's not finding anything because they are fairly deep underground and inactive at this time. Even with the recent rain we got the last couple of days, and as wet as my climate is, worms are disappearing. Getting very hard to find. Just a fact this time of year.

I'm not saying I cant find them AT THEM MOMENT! this is, like, months. I go out, when it does rain, at night, do everything i can. A few weeks ago it was raining a lot. I still couldn't find any.

I'm in VA right, now. it just finished raining, i'm hoping this place has better worm population...
