It's nice to finally see some wee ones here... I just went to feed some snakes and saw little squiggles in the female western blackneck's tub. I've got 8 perfect little babies! 5 males and 3 females. They are extra beautiful for western blacknecks... lots of green and really strong orange on their stripes! I am going to keep a male that I really like, the rest will be up for grabs once they are all feeding and growing regularly. They are nice BIG babies! Mama's doing well and just ate some silversides happily. These are from the same female that produced 7 last year.

Here are the bouncing boys

Hi asnakeluvinbabe: I'd like to see a picture of the parents if you don't mind. I have a subadult pair of female eastern garters and have never seen an adult pair of Westerns. Those are very big beautiful babies. by the way. Finally, do you have any leads on any eastern males? Thanks, elaphilately. PS, I fell in love with garters when I was a kid bopping around and collecting on the Presidio of San Fran Cisco.

As opposed to eastern blackneck garter:

Yeah, me too. A friend in Portland has a few WC western blacknecks so I got to see them in person. Nice looking garters but I wasn't all that impressed. I prefer the striking contrast on the eastern blacknecks. Shannon's snakes, are of course, some of the best looking westerns I've seen.

They're pretty cool, they just aren't AWESOME. They aren't BLACKNECKS. Ya know?

I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but there are more to this group than just easterns and westerns. There's more in Mexico. Similar, but different than either eastern blacknecks, or westerns. Thamnophis pulchrilatus for example.

One of the babies didn't make it, it died a few days after being born. I noticed the vent on it looked "sucked in" the night before it passed... I didn't do a recount yet but I have a feeling it was one of the females.... The other babies are all doing great and are eating great!

Sadly I got reports from my mom (since i've been in texas) that three more dropped dead. And I am very confused by this, because those babies have been eating HUGE portions of fish and were very robust. The night before I left I fed them very well. Strangely, all 3 were found upside down in the water dish (not at the same time). One was hanging half in, half out, with his head in the water. They have 2 small dishes, they are simply orange juice container screw caps, very shallow and there is no way a healthy baby could have drowned. I will not be releasing any of the remaining 4 to the public for... quite some time. I need to monitor the situation and try to figure out if this was simply a bad clutch or if something killed them. The guppies they ate were the same that a bunch of my other snakes ate and nobody else died! :(

I sure hope I have at least ONE female left....
