i was giving a snake by a friend for my son. i ask my friend what kind of snake it was he himself didnt know so now im here seeking some help.so here i am with a snake which i dont mind taking care for my son i been doing some research i think is a ribbon snake? thank you for any help

It's a Dekay snake as stefan said (storeria dekayi) very easy snakes to care for they feed mostly on worms.

Beautiful Dekayi! They love slugs and worms but slugs are their favorites! We have had one now for 2 years. They have the cutest faces! Never bite or musk.

I think if the snake is for your son, then let this one go and get a garter. This isn't a very good beginner snake. They like to be cool. Very cool most of the time. Also, being slug/snail specialists, finding food for them can be tough to do year 'round.

You two crack me up... there is no easier snake on planet earth to care for.

Mine all eat cut night crawlers from wal mart, they don't require anything more than a 10 gallon tank, a water bowl, hide and be fed.

They never bite or musk, they don't flip out when handled, and I have sold them to school teachers for classrooms where they want to teach kids not to fear snakes.

Our first ever snake was a Dekayi, we had no idea what we were doing, and she grew very old and passed from age, heck she exceeded the average life expectancy by a year.

Well that's what you say, and that very well may be your experience but that's not what I keep hearing from a lot of people that try to keep them. They either refuse to eat anything, enough to keep them healthy, or will only take slugs which can be next to impossible to provide in sufficient quantity, end up losing weight, withering away, and dying. That's just what I hear a lot.

At any rate, I think it would probably be easier to feed a garter when it comes to having a steady food source. I just don't see most dekayi readily taking food that is readily available year round, and if you do get one that is a slug eater, you need to got out and find your own slugs, lots of them, which can be a PITA.

I'm sure there's exceptions but I keep hearing that most of them can be fussy eaters, aren't very hardy in captivity, and don't seem to do as well as garters.

I'm not sure "hard to keep" is the right way to word it.
I've had very good luck keeping those great little brown snakes.
I've had a few picky eaters but that has been rare.

My toughest case ever started taking worms off the hemostats within a few weeks of capture, My Xena ate from my hands the day I picked her up off the ground.

My fondness for these snakes even compelled me to buy Storeria.com (http://www.storeria.com)and start building a site just for them. (I am abandoning the original template in favor of a better looking one I found)

I placed Xena's babies with several people on this forum who had exceptionally great experiences raising and keeping them.

My Dekayi has been a great snake to keep. My youngest child, Connor caught this one and I'm still not really sure how, as they are quite fast little things!

As for slugs and such, Wayne told me how to keep a slug colony going during the winter and if I can do it successfully for 2 years , than so can anybody I would think. My little Dekayi actually switched to worms on his own, which makes things a whole lot easier since his tank mates were eating his slugs!

Anyways, we have had ours for 2 years now and if I can find another, I would love to have a second. Good Luck with him/her!
