Now the one thing I honestly have a hard time with when I field Herp and catch a garter snake is their musk. What have any of you found to be a decent way of getting the smell off your hands? I know it isn't a big thing but it is slightly annoying.

I don't have a lot of experience with musking, but has anyone ever tried using pumice bars or gojo/orange hand cleaner? Stuff takes diesel oil and bearing grease off like its nothing, might work on musk.

Two summers ago a friend and I went out and caught a ton of garters, we let them all go. And I had musk all over my hands. When I got home I rinsed them in paint thinner because that stuff will cut the scent off of anything. So I did that and then went inside and washed my hands with soap and water and then put some lotion on my hands. And guess what? I could still smell the musk. It was terrible. And that paint thinner found all the little cuts on my hands lol.

have you considered those very thin latex? gloves that mechanics wear, they resemble those used by surgeons,[perhaps they are the same ones] ;)

Leave it on and enjoy the smell... It's like freshly baked snake musk cookies!!! :D But really, I use lemonlime hand sanitizer when I get musked/pooped on. Though, I'm prone to getting sick really easily, so it's a habit to use a ton of it when there's poop involved.

Smells like a good day of herping to me. If I come home reeking, you know I had a good time.:p

Aw, now I feel like I've missed out on something! As much time as I spend harassing snakes, I've never been musked on...
But maybe you could try a small amount of kerosene? It sounds odd, but my grandpa self-stains a lot of furniture, and that stuff gets wood stain off of skin... Of course, the smell of kerosene is pretty bad too, so I guess that'd depend on how dead-set you are on getting the musk off! :p

Why would you mind musk at all?! It is the sweetest scent on the earth. I am thinking of making a perfume, 100% natural, organic, vegan.. humanely collected snake musk perfume! :D
I would wear that every day and happily explain to people, it came out of my snakes butts. And since they are my friends, I will proudly wear it for all of eternity.

Well, in real life, I actually don't have any friends. I have agoraphobia, so my snakes are my only friends that can physically be "there" for me. I know they wouldn't mind the musk smell, since it comes from them... Hah.

I haven't experienced much garter musk, but tomato juice seems to work for neutralizing skunk musk, so it may be worth trying it for garter musk.

Someone should test that, see how snakes react if you pick them up smelling like musk... but not that particular snakes musk.. not sure how though. Whatever.

It's worth trying if you want to waste tomato juice. Skunk musk and garter snake musk are completely different compounds. You can try tomato juice but it will only make you smell like garter musk and tomato juice. Garter musk smell really doesn't have a very long life. Most of it simply washes off and the rest wears off quickly.

It was sarcasm, and my weird sense of humour (which makes people uncomfortable). I told you how I feel today in the PM, and I'm trying to make my day go a bit better. :p
