So I'm in Montana right now for an engineering competition. My team and I had a bit of down time so we went climbing/hiking at a local spot. On the hike back, around 8:45pm, I noticed what I thought was a piece of climbing rope on the ground, I was mistaken.

Found this guy on the side of the hiking trail, which suprized me because it was getting pretty late and it was pretty cold up there.

Sorry for the really bad picture quality, wasn't expecting to be taking any pictures and all I had was my phone. Can any one identify?

Good call Stefan, looks like a wandering to me too.

Awesome. I was really surprised at how docile it was after only like two minutes of handling. Now I just have to work on finding one back in iowa.

You won't find any Wanderings in Iowa.
Central Iowa is T.radix(Plains garter) and T.s.parietalis (Red Sided garter) range.
Both great snakes.;)

I figured there weren't any like that in iowa :) I ment more just a garter snake in general. I was tempted to bring that one back. I figured that would have been a really hard ride for the snake though, not to mention the climate change from montana and iowa. Just let it back down right where I found it and it just slithered under a stone a few feet away.

You're in Montana, in the great outdoors and you hadn't planned on taking pictures?!! Somebody go get an actual rope.
