Is anyone working with these similis without the dorsal stripe.

I saw someone selling those recently. Don't remember where. Now, I'm not talking about blue stripe ribbons which can be found for sale. Someone a few weeks ago was selling garter snakes just like that one above. Nobody is breeding them that I know of, these were wild caught.

They are from Florida though so it's perfectly legal for someone to go rape the population and sell them.

Hi,

I thought you were someone else, please accept my apology for my comment.

No need for an apology Scott. I'm supposed to be getting a trio of nice blue similis tomorrow, but they all have the dorsal stripe. I have a friend looking for me some without the dorsal though that's what i really want.

Sorry it's took me so long to reply my computer has been down since friday. Thanks everyone for the replies i absolutely love these snakes. They were hand picked from a friend in florida to make sure i had some nice breeders. The stripeless ones win the best look in my opinion compared to the other similis.

Very cool snakes. Does anybody know how the stripe-less gene work?

I doubt it's actually a single gene as much as it is just a naturally occuring variant of similis. Just like the stripeless easterns we have up here! :)

I see. A pair of stripe-less ones, then, could parent all striped babies, etc., or not, or just at random, or in some odd pattern?

I've got lots of babies to take pics of but i may wait another week or so to get some size to them first and then post pics. All of my babies are eating everyday right now. I have about 76 babies and still waiting on one more to drop.

realizing that people have their own methods of bringing up their snakes, i noted your comment on the seventy plus babies and would like to know what you feed your scrubs as it is obviously the way to go, i'm asking as i'm back in the baby game after a lot of years and would dearly love to bring through as many as possible from my litter of twenty

I go fishing and catch fresh bluegill and then i scale and fillet the meat and freeze it. I mix pinky parts, cut up nightcrawlers, cut up bluegill and some vitamins. I do feed my babies everyday until they are taking whole pinks on there own. To feed all my baby garters which is 68 it takes 1 bluegill, 2 pinks, and 2 nightcrawlers per day and the best part is the fish is free. I don't like using guppies because of the parasite load. I lost a few babies thanks to guppies. If you keep them and raise them you have better results because the pet stores don't care at all for feeder guppies.

I would love to have some fresh caught bluegill for my snakes.
Not sure they would get it all. Tastes too good.;)

I don't use much of my bluegill for my garters for that reason alone!! :D

Is bluegill safe?!?! Cause I could catch some!!

guidofatherof5

Yes.
They need to be frozen to help reduce parasites though.

Back when i first started keeping garters i got 3 albino marcianus and lost all three thanks to the popular pet shop guppies so i try to stay away from them now. I have not used them in several years and will not unless it's a last resort. Im so thankful that all of my babies are eating and i have not lost any in several years.

Just remember that bass a bluegill are near the top of the food chain in waters where they occur. That means contaminants such as PCB's, mercury, and other heavy metals which may or may not be present in high enough concentrations to be of concern, will accumulate in these fish.

I was concerned about that when i first started but i have had great luck for several years and they don't eat the fish for long before they get switched to pinkys and then they only get fish and worms for a treat.

Well, these substances are tolerated by a wide variety of animals and are slowly eliminated from their systems. Just like anything else, it's only toxic when levels reach a certain point although there is evidence that PCB's can cause cancer at low levels.
