WOW.
Look at all the photos you want.
They don't hold a candle to seeing them in person.
This is one gorgeous snake. WOW
Thanks to Timic(Tommy) I now have 2 males.
They arrived safe and sound and are relaxing. I will post a few photos in the next couple of days.

Eastern Blacknecks (Thamnophis cyrtopsis ocellatus)

They said they were ready, so here you go. Better photos to follow.
This is the female(I think) Tommy said he sent 2 males but I take issue with that.
Male or female, I don't care.
The second is of the male.

I had one guppy left tonight so I offered it to the new male Black-necked.
Now, I have no guppies left. What a shame, for the guppy that is.:D
I'll be purchasing more tomorrow. Hoping the female will start eating then.

I must concur. Not much of a cat person myself. Especially a spastic techno-dancing cat that clearly has been living on Mercury laden fish.:p A "Mad Catter" I suppose.

The little male ate again today(guppies).
I offered a scented pinky and he almost took it but stopped short of grabbing it. It had a different mouth feel and he refused.
The larger female is still holding out.
No concerns here as she just needs a little more time.

Those are such nice looking snakes. I'vehad so many garters but never black necks. There on my Wish list now. I'm sure she'll eat soon. Have you tried a worm yet?

Still not sure if the female is eating.
The guppies I put in the water dish were gone in the morning and the worm chunks from this evening are half gone.
I know the male is definitely eating, the pig.:D

guidofatherof5
06-05-2011, 06:58 AM
The evidence:
Last night I placed a food dish under their hide. In the dish was fresh salmon and worm chunks. Checking once before bed I found no food touched and a rather normal sized female Black-neck.
This morning I found an empty food dish and a rather plump looking female blackneck.
I feel I have a proponderance of evidence to rule.
I now have an eating female Black-neck.

The female is in opaque phase now. I'll get an updated photo when she sheds.
She's starting to calm down some.

A calm garter is happy garter :D
Well, maybe not... Snap seems happy to be left alone... Especially when she gets the treat of a f/t frog ;)
Cant wait to see the picture of that beauty.

Both snakes went into opaque phase at the same time and both shed the same night.
Looks like these two have good communication.

I haven't had much time to spend with them as this flood situation requires much of my extra time.

This beautiful female is in blue phase (shedding). She hasn't settled down much since arriving on the Ranch.
I'm thinking about housing her with a group of adult radixes.

They're spectacular snakes blacknecks. :) I'd like a couple of Eastern Blacknecks as well.
With our Western Blacknecks it's the male that is finding it hard to settle. He's much more reclusive, the female hangs out at the top of the plants and watches what's going on in our livingroom.
How old are your two Steve?

So still missing, bummer. They are great looking snakes. Okay so I learn something new every time I visit the forum. Sometimes because I'm smart enough to ask and sometimes the light bulb finally goes off. In Michael's signature above and others on the forum that do it, the numbers, 2.1, 3.3, etc. I never got that until now. That's how many male/female of a certain snake you own, right??:o Don't know why that took so long to figure out. So what is first? Male or female? Hope this guy turns up Steve. Do you actively search or just figure he'll show up when he wants to?

guidofatherof5

Invisible Snake
06-10-2012, 07:13 PM
Hey Steve so if the male escaped, what are the chances of him making it on his own?

I ask because if he made it outside and is surviving, there is a possibility of him mating with the local radixes

guidofatherof5
06-10-2012, 07:16 PM
It's possible and I hope it doesn't happen. Would be better if he died. I hate to say that but it's better then producing hybreds.
I don't want to be the cause of that.

ProXimuS
06-10-2012, 07:24 PM
Does any one know if there are reports of it happening in the wild?

Invisible Snake

Does any one know if there are reports of it happening in the wild?

Yes there have been reports of hybrids happening in the wild with garter snakes.

guidofatherof5
06-10-2012, 07:48 PM
It's possible anywhere there is overlapping ranges.

ProXimuS
06-10-2012, 08:15 PM
I always wondered that about wild animals, but never heard about it happening.

ConcinusMan
06-11-2012, 12:17 AM
It's not all that likely to happen. 3 different species in WA share habitat and not one confirmed hybrid has been reported. Most other "hybrids" from around the country aren't confirmed either. Just reported by amateurs that don't know what they're doing.
