View Full Version : Hi from England
Hi, i'm James. I use Nix as an alias and have had my Garter for about a year now. Still haven't got around to sexing him/her but we named "him" Lennie anyway, will make a nice conversation starter if he turns out to be female.
and that's about all i have to say... hi :).

Nice to have you on the forum.
We would be glad to help you sex Lennie. All we need is a couple good under tail photos.
Here's a link that will show you the kind of photos needed. It will also show you how to sex your buddy.
I also put a link to the garter snake care sheet.

Hi and welcome from sunny Liverpool:)
thanks for the warm welcome. managed to get a pic of his tail, but still no idea what gender he/she is. though with how active he is, i'd guess he's male.

sory about the bluriness, i can't get him/her to sit around for long, figity little bugger.
if it's too blurry, just say so and i'll try to get a clarer pic in a couple of days when he's finished eating.
also a pic of Lennie him/herself =3

Looks like a nice, healthy little boy to me. The tail is long and doesn't taper immediately after the cloaca. He's a healthy looking little guy, too. I'm no expert at sexing, though.

If it's only 2 months old, then I'd guess it's a female,
because of (her?) size.
I might be wrong because they are quick growers you know:).
Oh yeah, hi and welcome from Belgium!!

Size doesn't always determine sex. When they're adults, you can easily tell a female from a male due to males being smaller, their faces are also less bold and large, from what I have seen.

Hello & welcome from Canada
thanks for the warm welcome, and thanks for the gendering (sexing still sounds odd to me), i'll proberbly get it done professionally sooner or later but it's nice to have a good idea =3

You just did have it done "professionally".;) The forum has spoken.:p There is rarely a need to probe or "pop" a garter snake. They are sexually dimorphic. Male and female do not look the same when it comes to outward appearance. There are significant yet subtle physical differences which are outwardly apparent. It only takes a little experience to spot the differences.
You are right, "sexing" is a little weird. Replace that word with "determining gender" and you will be OK with it. Also, there's big difference between these two sentences:
1. I am sexing my garter snake.
2 I am having sex with my garter snake.
Or...
1. I need to sex my garter snake
2. I need to have..
oh nevermind.
In short, there are verbs and then there are transitive verbs. Listen to me (I don't recommend it) an American giving English lessons when I don't even speak the language properly myself.

I'm new to this site but also from England - Wetherby in Yorkshire. What type of garter is Lennie??
Are you aware of any breeders or large hobbyists in England? I would LOVE to begin a breeding project. Always wanted a SF Garter ( I lived in Los Angeles for 18 years) but not much chance of that happening now eh? ZOOPLAN in Germany looks like being a good contact for us - have you checked him out yet?:)
to be honest, i have no idea what type of garter Lennie is, and i've no real breeder contacts as i got mine from a large Aquatics and reptiles store (aquamania Blackburn)
