I thought these little beauties deserved their own thread. Their lack of color to me is beautiful. They all are eating and appear to be doing fine.
Getting all of them to the 6 month mark is important. I'm so excited to watch them grow.
This photo was taken with a Canon EOS with a macro lens and flash.
This photo is very true to color(or lack of it) as I can get.

I was thinking the same thing. True axanthic. As in, no yellow but no other side effects such as bluing, loss of pattern, or increased melanin. Just plain old true axanthic and nothing more or less. I wonder what gene or genes are responsible for this. I mean, is this from the mother, the father, or is it a product of their combined contributions. I'd be looking into this Steve. There's definitely something special about them. Could lead to new combo morphs some day too.
So what should we call your new radix color Steve? Your call.

The male is my newly acquired (last year) wild caught Iowa albino. The female was a late Fall rescue. I'll post an upated photo of both later today.
I conceder the female a dark phase. Hence her name, Darkgirl.
If all goes well they will be paired up again next season. Then the season after that one of the males should be mature enough to breed back to Darkgirl. The year after that a daughter should be ready to breed back to the father. That should also be the year I can breed sib. to sib.

Wow, Steve great breeding project you have there, maybe next year bred them back to make the strainstronger.
Thanks for the call yesterday. The Zoo was great and somewhat close by.
While we were there we passed by a breed pond the Zoo has, breeding three spot frogs which are becoming rare in the area and a food source for this reptiles. Anyway, as I was on the path a very large fem concinnus crossed and I snapped her up for a look.
Nice colors and well fed. Sorry, no pictures didn’t think of it.
People around jumped, screamed and well it wasn’t good to hold her to long.

Michael,
I didn't see anything on the map showing that concinnus attraction you were at. What gives?:D
ConcinusMan
04-27-2011, 09:10 AM
That's because it wasn't a concinnus. It was a red phase Puget Sound garter. T.s. pickeringii. Vancouver BC is a long ways from concinnus' range but red phase puget sound garters are very common there. Concinnus' are limited to Oregon's Willamette Valley and extreme SW WA. I suspect there are a lot of hybrids out there due to people making the same I.D. error. Remember shannon's "rainbow man" ? Not a concinnus but sold as one.
pugets from Vancouver B.C. look like this:

Maybe we can persuade Steve that a double-pronged, trans-Atlantic breeding programme is best for the snakes ;). You know, all about spreading the gene pool, and ensuring that all these beauties aren't under the same roof.
When you fly to the States you'd better make sure you're flying back with an airline that is snake friendly. I think Continental are happy to carry snakes.

i really must try to reign in my over active imagination, i have this mental image of having talked Steve out of half a dozen of his silvers with your double pronged argument, he then changes his mind and as my continental plane hurtles down the runway towards lift off, there stands Steve, waiting feet slightly apart with a bazooka on his shoulder

Yeah, I'm definately not going to say I'm certain, and you could very well be right Richard just variability in the wild type. The thing that I noticed that struck me as a possible indication that they are something different was how stark clean white they are under the chin and belly. Shrug
I have a pair that I got from Scott that were from an his axanthic pairing, only no axanthics were produced in the litter, so I am hoping these "normals" are now isolated from the anery gene, yet carry the gene that when combined with anery makes that particular blue axanthic look. These two look very much like the "green hypo" radix that pop in certain areas. Anyway I think it would be worth crossing them to Steves axanthic and see what happens. I also have the classic blue axanthic female to cross to them. Who knows?
ConcinusMan
12-12-2011, 03:43 PM
But is it white pigment, or a lack of pigment? That's what I meant when I said they don't look "mutated". I guess I can't really judge that from a picture. Your project idea sounds promising either way. Who knows what will pop up from that cross. Maybe something totally unique and never seen before. That would be awesome. Just when you think we've "used up" radixes to produce all the possible morphs...
Jeff B
12-12-2011, 04:27 PM
Even if that phenotype isn't the result of lacking of reduced red and yellow, but rather an increase in white that still in my mind has tons of potiential because maybe crossed to the classic blue axanthic make a black snake with blue sides and a blue dorsal stripe, or crossed to anerythristic it would make a black snake with a bright silver/gray dorsal stripe and belly.
I'm guessing Steve, you have already considered crossing it to the red radix or the red albino to see what that would do? A red or pink or peach radix with a white dorsal would be sweet!

Proof or the pudding comes in a few years, I'm not sure I can wait until these guys are old enough to breed to find out whether this B&W phenotype is predictably heritable. The fact that you got 7 of them and some other normals in the same litter implies a genetic mutation, or combination of recessive genes from the parents.
Steve, do you plan to breed the same parents again this year?

I don't see what difference it makes. Who cares if there was a salmonella contamination. There are no implications other than what I would do normally, and that is, wash your hands after handling mice and snakes, and store them separate from food meant for human consumption. People who were getting sick obviously failed to do that. It's not a coincidence that most of the people sickened were under age 12.

EasternGirl
05-06-2012, 12:25 PM
Thanks guys. I know that he has a neuro disorder because he already had it when he was given to me by my breeder. My breeder had taken him in from another member and was going to keep him if he couldn't find a home for him...but offered him to me, knowing I would give him a good home. We aren't absolutely sure what caused the neuro disorder but suspect it did have something to do with the inbreeding necessary to produce albinos...this kind of neuro disorder happens sometimes with albinos. He tends to turn upside down a lot or to slither sideways. Sometimes he sleeps upside down...and he twists himself in knots a lot. His head shakes a little too. Other than that, he is perfectly healthy...he can eat, drink, climb...swim. He is very sweet. I have had him since March...and he was just shy of a year old when I got him. He is in an enclosure with my albino checkered, Hermes...and they will soon be getting another roomie...an albino red-sided.

I think you might have "my" snow there. I got 3 from Julio last year and sold them last summer but i sent this guy as a freebie. The other two were "flawless". Healthy little guy and doing very well, its just that he had this head tilt/tremor and every now and then he would actually slither upside down. quite a lovable character.

Yeah, i know, it is funny. Jason bought the snows and the iowa plains (from julio's red albino plains pair) in the video, and a few others, from me last Sept. I got them from Julio's litters last summer.

I have a '11 erythristic eastern that had a neurological problem as well. He'd have a hard time controlling his neck, wobbling side to side a lot. He'd miss the food sometimes when he'd strike. Well last week, he grabbed a piece of fish about 3 times the size of his head, raised it above the substrate, and took off with it. (He was worried about the radix grabbing it.) In Zach's case, he seems to have grown out out of the problem. Maybe with some growth the muscles are stronger?
P.S. After he gobbled down his fish, he took off after the radix and tried to wrestle his piece away from him. I better cut them a little smaller next time!

When I got into their enclosure I was approached by one of these beauties. I was taken back by just how nice looking these snakes are.
The photos don't do them justice as it doesn't capture the "Pop" of the white.
A couple years from now I'll be holding a full grown version. I look forward to those times.

You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the radix zone.

My security system is in place and I have total confidence it my ninja radixes.
Your squad will never get close.:D They will be aloud to penetrate the perimeter but by then it's too late for them.
The trap will be sprung and they will be sent home, defeat.:D

Is it the light in the photo, or is there a hint of peachy colour in the white?
