I thought it was time for an update to these beautiful snakes.
First, all are doing well but..............
Approximately 3 months ago 2 of the 7 escaped during feeding time. The enclosure door open and my attention not focused on possible escapes (my fault).
Within a week one was located in the laundry room and returned to its home. This left 1 still missing.
Last night around midnight I walked through the dark snake room before bed. As I walked I stepped on a snake. I grabbed the little beggar and found it to be the missing B/W radix.
A little thin for being gone for 3 months. I immediately placed her in her water dish and she drank a lot. 30 minutes later she was still in the water so I offered a small piece of worm which she took.
Earlier this evening I fed that group and she enjoyed a nice meal. I think she will make a full recovery from this walkabout she was on.
I will up date a group photo very soon.

I'm glad you found the 2 and hopefully they will each make a full recovery.
You have an awesome collection there at the ranch, not to mention huge. Maybe you should get an intern to help you out at feeding and cleaning time ;)

Funny you should mention that. I once in awhile get volunteers to come in and help. Usually people that have taken a tour of the snake room. They really enjoy interacting with the different species but especially like working (hah) with the big female radixes.

Happy to hear the escapees are back where they belong. Gives me a little hope for Cleo. FYI...if any of the b/w females show interest in moving to North Carolina, I would be more than happy to make them part of my tham-ily. :D

I don't see any of these leaving the Ranch anytime soon.
I hope to reproduce some in the Spring. Last year the female threw slugs/jellies.

One of these beauties has taken a turn for the darker. Looking more like mom. I thought it just needed to shed but after the shed it still looked dark.
I'll get a few photos up in the next couple of days.

Some sad news. The one snake that was looking like its mother has passed away. No idea what went wrong.
Went off food and within 2 weeks was dead. Steady downhill slide.

Don't be silly. Tank is pretty smart but I don't think he knows how to use a camera. He doesn't require batteries either. :D

Wow, I read every page also. Very interesting and captivating thread. I couldn't believe in the feeding video how not one of those radix scrubs started fighting over the cut up worm pieces. I thought that was amazing! Congrats Steve for your contributions to the garter snake genetic pool. Thanks for a great adventure throughout his thread.

I think so. I asked him for a breeder loan cause there were only 3 males produced and all died so I'm sitting here with a ton of females lol

Think so? I'm not so sure, I was thinking simply polymorphism, but then again, I don't know all the details. They just don't look "mutated" to me, if that makes any sense.
It just seems so normal to me. So the stripes aren't yellow or orange. Not much else is different. Just seems like it isn't much of a stretch to appear that way.
But is it white pigment, or a lack of pigment? That's what I meant when I said they don't look "mutated". I guess I can't really judge that from a picture. Your project idea sounds promising either way. Who knows what will pop up from that cross. Maybe something totally unique and never seen before. That would be awesome. Just when you think we've "used up" radixes to produce all the possible morphs...
hate to say it but he was wrong lol.....and im back at this thread agian!! love it!
can we please get an update steve?

This update isn't a good one. The 7 snakes started off well but never put on the size they should and over the last years snakes have died from unexplained reasons, those mystery deaths that happen. Out of the original 7 there is 1 living. This snake is the size of a 1 year old. I wish I had better news.
