Garters normally eat worms, pinky mice or fish. You could try guppies or earthworms/nightcrawlers, but stay away from red wigglers. They're often sold as composting worms. They have red and white bands on their body. They're also toxic to garter snakes.
If you post a clear picture of the underside it's tail, we can probably sex it for you.

WELCOME IM ROBERT!!!!! checkards get larger than most other captive garter snakes but smae diet is approved...certain fish, pinkys/fuzzy/mouse parts, and worms NOT RED WRIGGLERS!!!!!! post a pic of tail and well try to sex it...as for naming your new friend you can do it yourself or start a thread or post(best option is to post in this thread) on this one that you want some name suggestions and well fight to the virtual death for it (metaphorically speaking) we can also come up with unisexual names (the names work either way)
once again welcome! if you need any help dont hesitate to ask anyone on this site(hopefully theyre active(often on the site))

Nice to have you with us.
Here's a link to the care sheet. It will answer many of your question.
I also put a link to a good sexing thread to assist you in discovering the sex of your snake.

It's not bisexual names, Robert. Its unisex names. Bisexual is something completely different.

^^ thanks
Hey I have 1 more question so i tried this and he hasn't eaten anything. My friend who gave him to me said he hasn't eaten in 4 days... and that was 3 days ago. So is it normal for them to not eat for a week or is there something more I need to do???

It takes them a while to settle in and get used to their surroundings. Offer him some food every day, he'll eat when he's ready. Depending on what he was fed before, he may not be hungry. Pinkies are more dense in nutrients and are digested slower, so hey stay full longer. Worms go out the fastest and should be fed every other day.
