no doubt every one is horrified at the disaster which continues in Japan,
are these upheavals getting worse ? or is it that we now get such graphic pictures piped directly into our homes, from planes helicopters news crews camcorders and whatever else, watching those scenes leaves me with that queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach, a feeling for which i'm grateful, as my biggest fear is that of becoming desensitized. after watching so much appalling misery. could the danger be that we react to these situations as if they were disaster movies, thinking about whats for lunch while we sit watching scenes of devastation, i hope not
i have taken a little time to put a rhyme together to express[ i hope] the feelings of us garter folk, our total sympathy for the people of japan and the unspeakable situation they find them selves in

From far away we watch unfold
those scenes of grief and death untold
our disbelief would make it seem
that these events are just a dream
who could know , just who could say
the planet moves , life swept away
perhaps at work or with friends to meet
all stopped, by tremors, at their feet
from very old, to recent birth
swallowed by this hell on earth
while nature smites this tragic land
we try our best to understand
why would our planet thus behave
with lethal quake, and giant wave
our wish to be in far japan
a chance to help our fellow man
so far across that ocean wide
means, direct help, from us denied
so i ask you all to join with me
and to our god we make this plea
their crisis over, their suffering done
for the people of the rising sun.

Wonderful words, John.

thanks Steve i was certain that our site members were feeling the same lack of comprehension as my self that this could actually be happening to so many people , so i put these words forward as a small gesture from us all

It's a horrible situation. I've been in touch with some of my past Japanese students. Luckily those I've spoken too seem fine, most of which reside in the Tokyo bay area. They're accustomed to this, even if it was worse than usual. The tsunami was the worst part of the event. The footage I've seen of that is just horrible.

The thing I find to be the most scary is the situation with the nuclear reactors. That's not just Japan's problem, it's everybody's. Everyone might want to stock up on a supply of potassium iodide pills just in case.
