Boomerang has been on the Ranch for a couple years now and has never bred. She's done a lot of growing and is a very docile snake. I've always wanted her to breed but things just never worked out.
Tonight, I was having trouble sleeping so I grabbed a flash lite to do a security sweep in the big snake room.
As I passed the enclosure holding Boomerang I noticed a fresh shed. I knew it was hers from the size and the fact she had gone opaque a few days ago.
Wanting to see my bright beautiful girl I turned on the lights and opened her enclosure.
Lifting the hide I find my girl locked up with the male I put in there a week ago. This is such good news on the Ranch.
I can't wait to see what these two produce. I hope it a bunch of little red scrubs.
Red or not they will be welcome on the Ranch.:)
She's a big girl so I hope she'll have a large litter.

Both parties have parted company and look fine.
Boom weighed in at 230g.
She'll get weekly weigh-ins until she delivers.

I know this might seem like a stupid question since I've asked this before about other snakes you've produced but is there any chance that some of these red radixes will make it off the ranch some day or should we just call them "bigfoot"? Sadly, not many to be found available and as a result, they are still priced higher than albinos and snows, even for WC reds. The only exception seems to be if you buy babies not showing red, and take a gamble.

I know I'm risking ticking people off again by saying this but it's kinda tough to get excited about a good number of these finally being produced in captivity if the breeder intends to keep them all to himself.

My intent is not to keep all of them. I do want to produce something with red and not a roll of the dice. For this reason I will keep them longer.
I will be glad to see some of my red radixes out in the world when they are finally produced.

Of course you definitely need to keep them long enough to see how they color up. That would be very nice to produce a line of them that have offspring that turn red reliably. Seems to be rather hit and miss with the bloodlines available now. Even if they breed two parents with the red gene, many of the offspring fail to turn red. Also, I have long suspected that the same gene is not necessarily responsible for the various red radixes out there. I think there's several different types of red ones, or at least red ones out there for which different genes are responsible for their color. I think people are breeding together whatever reds they can get, and in some cases, the same gene is not responsible, making red offspring an unreliable outcome.

We work with what we have.

Does anyone know if breeding two reds like Steve has done here, sometimes result in offspring that do not color up even as adults? Just wondering. I do know that many breeders end up taking a wait and see attitude with offspring born to red parents but I'm not really sure of the details of those breedings. Not sure if they were pure red to red breedings like these two.

Can we count on red offspring from a mating like this?

Last year when I bred Nova(high red radix) to Mr. Mansley(red radix). They produced Rudolph and others ranging from red to, brick red to no red.

Not much growth in the last month but she has been through a lot.
She's 61 days gravid. Still eating strong.
Hoping all is well with her babies.

Wow could happen anytime now. Can't wait to see the babies.

I was unaware that with the red radix they might not show the red until adulthood? Should be interesting to follow this and see how the different ones end up & if there are any colour tendencies that can be spotted as babies. Neat project Steve.

This morning Boom didn't come out and greet me like always. She wants to stay under the hide and curled up.
I've moved all her friends out of the enclosure because I think she's about to deliver.
Then again, maybe she's not gravid. What do you think:D

This morning I turned on the lights in the big snake room. I then saw Boomerang coming out of her hide and noticed how much thinner she was.
That could only mean one thing. She had her babies.
Checking the enclosure I found many slugs and one stillborn.
Then a little head popped up as if to say, "Who are you"
This little one has already been named "Kaboom"
Pictures to follow.

So sorry to hear about the losses; however, the lone survivor is a miracle in itself because she survived Mom's horrible disease. Way to go, Kaboom! Good luck at the ranch and a wonderful job, Boom.:D

Great news. Kaboom took her first worm today.
At first she had no interest.
Left it in with her for a few hours.
The worm(earthworm) is gone and she's sporting a full belly and a smile.:D

I had to place Kaboom in a shed box for a few minutes this morning as her shed was coming off in pieces.
Within a few minutes she was done and I noticed a nice red color on he flanks.
Before there was just a hint of red but now it is clearly visible.
Looks like she's going to be a big red girl like her mom.

That's how I am with my babies... My mom was disturbing them after they ate and were all curled up together. I shooed her out of my office quite quickly to let them sleep. :D
