Hi! I am the current owner of 3 snakes( spotted python, colombian boa , and normal cornsnake). After discovering wild eastern garters this summer, I am in love with them. I plan to start a collection as soon as new babies are born this year. Does anybody here recommend a particular garter? I have heard easterns are more nervous in general. I think the pics I have seen of Flames, California red sided, Oregon red sided and puget sounds are just amazing. Are these particular garters good to keep? Thanks for any advice. I think I'm in the right place for garter expertize(lol).

Hi Dennis,
Welcome to our community. As to which garters are good to keep, there are really no bad garters. :)

Welcome Dennis,
You are in the right place and have also discovered a little know secret. "Garter Snakes are great". Little know to the rest of the world and to many other snake keepers.
I currently keep 6 different species of garter snakes.
If you ask me which I recommend, well. That's an easy call.
T.radix(Plains Garter Snake) Hands down for me. Many of mine are like big old dogs. Very docile and interactive.
Glad you are with us.
Here's a link to the care sheet which is a great read since you are just getting into garters. Any of your questions not answered in the care sheet, feel free to post them to the forum.

All garters have different personalities. What species you get is up to your own personal preference. Each and every snake is different. They are much like humans, you never find a human that is exactly the same. I keep Northwestern garter snakes and Oregon red spotted garter snakes. Both of them are really fun. Some people might find Northwesterns a bit boring with their colouring, but in my opinion, they are the most beautiful garter snakes in the world. :D Udo is right when he says garters are dangerous. They are like a drug that you cant stay away from.

Thanks for the advice . I plan to keep a few species as well. Unfortunately, I only saw one garter snake at 2 reptile expos I've been to here in the northeast. But luckily with so many people on this websiteowning and breeding, I can't wait till some new ones arrive. I have a feeling that I might become addicted(lol).
Thank again for the input .

Hello and welcome!
Easterns aren't really nervous, though some regional variants have reputations for feistiness or skittishness. Michigan Easterns are in my experience, pretty docile and even wild caught individuals quickly become spoiled once they become accustomed to humans.

i have eastern, red sided, and checkered. i have found them all to be very good. eastern and red sided mine seem a little more interested in their surroundings and excellent escape artists, my checkered seemed to tame quicker, and bred this year with no effort, they seem to get along well together but i feed seperately. never been bitten by a garter can be a little flighty until used to handling. i like them all.

my friend and i are stating to realize that we prefer north american snakes over all of the others. i used to like pythons and boas, but now i'm hooked! he recently just picked up an albino bull snake and i ldecided on my little albino checkered garter! i couldn't be happier with my choice!
