View Full Version : Late Easter eggs
Hi there
This year, I won't have any Thamnophis offspring. But there's something else that left me some eggs :D

I hope that the homemade drying chamber works well. It's the first time that I have some snake eggs.

Looks like you have things pretty well set up for incubating those eggs Cyrill. As long as you don't let them dry out they'll be fine. Good luck!
Thanks James. I started to set up the box 2 weeks before and tested / changed her quite a lot. This is how it looks like now (maybe someone is interested in):
The relative humidity is arount 90% (+/- 1%).
The temperature is between 27 and 28 ° C (80 - 82 ° F).

nice, how long do you incubate them for before they hatch?

Cyrill,
I'm very happy for you. The mother is very pretty, so I hope the babies come out just as nice. Thanks for sharing these great pictures.
Rick
P.S. The incubator looks great.
Cyrill,
Congradulations and hope for a 100% on the hatching. Great speciman and I like the incubator, nice system.

Congrats on the eggs Cyrill. I haven't even started breeding my Lampropeltis mex. thayeri yet....had them down a bit long due to some caging problems. Best of luck to you for them.

Congratulations with the eggs.
They look ok.
Nice species!
Thank you all :-)
@FitnessFreak
They need about 2 months, till they hatch.
@abcat1993
You're right. It's a Lampropeltis mexicana greeri (as sure as I can be).
@GarterGuy
Good luck with yours. Would be interested in pictures of your thayeris.

Looks very nice, hopefully the outcome will be great :)
I'm hoping also for some eggs of my blairi... but I wonder sometimes if the male is capable:mad:
Thanks to you two :-)
@Snaky
Hope for you that it works fine with your blairis. What phase do you have and why do you think that your male is capable?

Well the male has already tried several times, but I've never seen them hooked to each other and have not had eggs so far. Yet they are already together for 2 years:(
What do you mean by phase? The latin name is L. alternata blairi. I don't really have that much knowledge of Lampropeltis as I have of Thamnophis:o

Thank you all :-)

Good luck with yours. Would be interested in pictures of your thayeris.
Check out the pics I have in the "Me and the other kids" album, I have two pics of my L.m.thayeri there. I'll definitely post pics if I get any hatchlings for sure!:D
@snaky
That's really quite a long time. How old are those 2? Sorry for the word "phase". I think, that's a word which is only used by us german speaking European. I thought that there were 2 different variants of L. alterna blairi.
1) alterna "phase" -> has 9 - 17 orange-red barrings
2) blairi "phase -> has 15 - 39 small barrings. Can be black and orange-red as well.
But I'm not sure at all about that. Read that in "Königsnattern von Rainer Thissen / Helmut Hansen 1996". As you see, this book isn't that new at all. Probably it's obsolete.
@GarterGuy
It's nice how much they can vary. I like your thayeris :-)

I must admit that I didn't knew about the info of the phases. When I bought them, they where lampropeltis mexicana alterna, but on a forum I go regularly they said that there where name changes in Lampropeltis. They told me that mine is Lampropeltis alterenata blairi. This all was more than 3 years ago.
They are 6 (the male) and 7 (the female) now. That's why I wonder if he's capable;) Like I said, I saw him rubbing against her many times last year, but I never saw them attached to each other and had no egg development whatsoever... I would already be happy with infertile eggs :D
Now I'm confused ;-) Did they say "alternata"? I never read alternata before. I knew them as "Lampropeltis alterna" (the breed), with those two variants "blairi" and "alterna". Hmm, strange.
But now I can understand why you are not sure at all about capability of he (propably it's she? or why do you think that he's the one?).

Yes, I've heard it changed from Lampropeltis mexicana alterna (probably "phase blairi" as I understood from your explanation) into Lampropeltis alternata blairi. But I've never did great research towards it.
I think it's he. I know madame holds her tail up, but still I've not seen him attached to her. I've seen him try though, but never succeed.:( A well, we'll see, it's no must.
Right. I just never heard the name "alternata". Anyhow, that's no reason why it shoudln't be like that. I gonna do some reseach if I find some time for it.

Keep me posted on the result. I remember that I also found it very strange and asked the question about alternata myself. But as said, I've never investigated it myself as the Thamnophis fever kicked in by then:o.
Right. I'm also definitely more interested at Thamnophis spec. :) Before we buyed the greeri's, we thought about buying alternas. That's why I had a look about this topic then. I'll keep you informed if I do it again.
The time has come. My first babies are here :D
Sadly only 2 of the 4 hatched. 1 coudln't open the egg (I just said to me - if he didn't get it alone, he's not strong enough). And the other one looks like he died some time before.
Altough, I'm very happy about those two little guys.
Number 1 (he's very "aggressive" as you see...very cute :-):

Hey congrats on the two hatchlings! I've got thayeri eggs "cooking" now. My female dropped 9 of them!!!! Wasn't expecting this many from her first breeding. So far all of them look really good except for one. It's been about two weeks now and the others are still nice and white and just getting bigger.

Thank you all for the congrats :-)
@Stefan
Maybe it's to early today - but I didn't get the joke. Just thinking about the scientific name, but I don't find any hint. Please help.
@Roy
I'm very happy for you that they got it now - and wow, 9 eggs are a lot as I think - very nice. I hope for you that all of them hatch. Let us know when they start.

No big loss, I was just referring to the word Lampropeltis, "shiny shield" (or "skin").
Thanks for the explanation, I like it to learn things like that - now, even the ones in the last row get it ;-)

Yeah, I'm full of useless trivia. :D
hehe :-) Just the sum of trivia makes them crucial.
