First off let me say I am not new to reptiles, or amphibians; just snakes. My collection consists of two African Bullfrogs, two Tokay Gecko's, two Skunk Gecko's, one Russian Tortoise, and now a Ribbon snake. This is the first snake I have ever owned. At first it would only take live guppies (I know not to give goldfish or rosy red's). After a few days I put a few pieces of silverside in the water dish with a live guppie and it would eat the guppie and a pice of the silverside. Today I put some pieces of silversides in a lid by themselves and it ate them. So I am hopefull it will continue to take them and not need live guppies to get it to eat. Just wanted to share.

Glad to have you with us, Nick.
Do you know which species you have?

Silversides are great food for garters.
Welcome. Do you know what kind of garter you have?

From the research I have done I believe it is a Western Ribbon Snake - Thamnophis proximus. I saw it at one of the local pet stores and had to have it.
