Congratulations Chloe! If you have surplus babies I might well be interested in buying a few. I'd like to see pictures.

They must have bred right away then. Hopefully you got some nice pictures, because I'm sure it's only a matter of time until "mating" is the topic for the photo contest :). Cheers,

Congratulations, Chloe:)
Are these the first babies from your radix ? And can you post pics from the parents as well ? (I'm a radix lover:D ) Our big radix female is also gravid and last year she gave birth to 55 babies !!!

I too have had large numbers of babies from T.radix (haydeni) in the past, somewhere in the 30s if I remember rightly. They're one of my favourite Garter species. I will get them again, if not this year, certainly next year.
Does anyone know if any other Garter species produce this many young? I have never seen so many from another species.

James,
I've seen reports of up to 80 babies being born. I think it was by T.s. parietalis, but I'll have to dig a little just to make sure. Rossman et al. covers it.

I just checked my records and the parents were put together on the 27th January and started mating straight away (pic below). The babies were born on the 26th April, so exactly 90 days. The babies are all a good size.

The golden yellow color of their stripes shows up very well even on the fuzzy pictures. They're going to be beautiful when they grow up!

Very nice.
From T. radix a litter of 92 snakes is recorded. Do not know where I found that on this moment. But I have placed it on my site and that means that it was a trusted item.
Must have been in one of these:
Strumpfbandnattern - Hallmen & Chlebowy (http://www.kousebandslangen.nl/hallmen_chlebowy.htm)
The Garter Snakes - Rossman e.a. (http://www.kousebandslangen.nl/rossman.htm)
Strumpfbandnattern - Thomas Bourguignon (http://www.kousebandslangen.nl/bourguignon.htm)
Die Strumpfbandnattern - Frank Mutschmann (http://www.kousebandslangen.nl/mutschmann.htm)
