I'm only able to see the first snake. Not sure if it's my problem only.

OK, I don't know what happened there, but that post above was completely dysfunctional. All I could get was a tiny dot in the upper left. When I try to backspace to get rid of it, I get a tiny square.
People often find dekayii and come here assuming they have a garter snake but can't identify the species.(for obvious reasons. It's not a garter!)

Striped CA King snake:
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:_7KAvvOXFIKZGM:http://petzotics.com/Snakes%20Images/CalStripeBB.jpg&t=1
I used to find those in San Diego, although they were usually brown and yellow and stripes were usually broken in places and some even had a section of bands like a normal king.
Like this one: http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/images/lgetulasd609.jpg
Or this one:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_KcNWsdXTxOc/S8yxttLmtoI/AAAAAAAAAvE/Yxq-FLEY49c/s640/SS855680-1.JPG
The very solid striped "clean" look of the first one is actually the exception.

No, don't know what this is, but that's one thing I do know:-) Eyes on a cuban wood snake are the 'slit-kind', whatever that's called.. and a diff head shape. Ugly buggers, but pretty eyes.. 1. i think cuban wood snakes look awesome and id love to own one
2. a snakes pupil vertically slit or not dosnt mean a d@m thing. iv personally seen a western diamond back with round eyes and another with vertically slitted pupils...and i have seen pics of columbian red tailed boas with vertically slitted pupils
3.this is not ment to sound offensive

Usually, you won't notice that a snake's eye pupils are vertical unless the light levels are very high, constricting the pupil. And yes, robert, it does mean a darn thing. Even if you've seen diamondbacks that appeared to have round pupils,(they look that way in very low light) a closer inspection will reveal that they do indeed have vertical pupils and all red tail boas and even rubber boas have vertical pupils as well. That's no secret.
The presence of vertical pupils can greatly narrow down identification and definitely rules them out as garter snakes. What I'm still trying to figure out is why that first snake pictured was chosen for this thread. Doesn't even resemble a garter IMHO.

normally id agree with yall but i was less than 5 inches away and iv seen the same one in defferant lighting im sure it had round pupils! evcen so a herpetologist that came to school says its only true for pit vipers and if i proved that wrong than i can prove the theroy wrong! what about the boa huh the columbian red tailed boas ! i saw one with a vertically slitted pupil! what now ooooo....i mea no disrespect but i am SURE of what i saw...i may be an amature to you guys but to others im an expert! and i stand by my opinions and observed facts.

Not sure what your argument is exactly. Snakes with heat pits as a general rule do have vertical pupils, yes. But so do boas and as you know, they don't have heat pits.
Forget whatever trick your own eyes played on you. Rattlesnakes (including western diamondback) are pit vipers, and as such, have vertical pupils. period.
You probably saw that snake when it's pupils were quite dilated. When they are like that, it's hard to spot the vertical pupil, as in this picture, but if you look very closely, you'll see the front edge of the pupil is somewhat straight. That's a vertical pupil. The back side often looks round when they are dilated.

Sorry, I edited my previous post. It explains how you are perceiving a round pupil. When the pupil is open fully, the "shutters" if you will, don't cover the pupil, making it appear to be round. In fact, you're right in a way, that they are round. It's when they partially close that the "slits" become apparent.
If you'll look at that pic, you'll see the pupil appears to be round but the front of the pupil isn't quite round. There's a flat area. That gives it away as a vertical pupil.

Hey, stefan deleted his "round" pupil pic. That's what I was saying "still not round" to. The fact is, even vertical pupils are round. It's the way the iris closes to block the pupil that makes them look vertical. In certain situations the iris opens wide enough that it doesn't cover the pupil and so you see "round" pupils but they are not perfectly round. The front will usually look a bit flattened.

I deleted it, because there was already a picture of a pupil round enough to be called round.

He was trying to make a point about round pupils on a pit viper(rattlesnake) and being how the pupils were rounder on his pic, than on mine, I'm just saying it made for a better example of round pupils.
The pupils, although still not round, were rounder than the pic I posted, is what I meant.

Huh? Kiwi is a fruit but it's also a bird. What a kiwi is NOT is well, anything but a bird or a fruit.
The bird is way cool. Flightless and nearly extinct. The only living relative to the recently extinct Dodo bird.
However, this thread is about snakes that look like garter snakes. Any more?

New Zealand is sometimes called Kiwi country but that's not an official name. There is no country past or present, called "kiwi" that I know of.
I'd like it if the thread could go back on track and see more snakes that look like garters.;)

Jesus I called the snake "Kiwi" in the previous post, nvm no one has a sense of humor here... just tryin to get the discussion back to identifying the type of snake instead of having 'intelli-wars' over pupil physiognomy.. . . But, carry on.. :-S
