I'm thinking about buying a second garter snake, and wondering where the best place to buy them is. Online? Breeder? pros and cons of each would be nice. Like the fact that the price of shipping's so freakin' high!

Also how do you find breeders in your area? I cant find any.

Post your city here and see if any breeders are close.
You are right, shipping is the big price.

You could probably pick up a concinnus or two from me.:p I have a few left I can part with. I don't charge much at all for the snakes themselves and I can usually ship for less than $30.:) If you can afford $60 I can ship you a pair of 2010 babies or a pair of 2009 hypoerythristics. If you only want one it would still cost you about $45:cool:

But seriously, off course, it's late in the season for buying garters but I'd say the best place I would say, at least for me, would be to get them from breeders right here on the forum. Kingsnake.com classifieds is a good place to look at certain times of the year too. I'm just saying that for most locations, there just aren't any breeders close by with anything decent for sale so you usually have to bite your tongue and pay shipping.

Ok, I'll try the forum. It will probaly be a couple weeks before I buy one, but that's what I'll try that first.

Same sex, only. Otherwise, hybrids.

What Stefan said. There is a small chance that the two may cross even without brumating. They are both T. sirtalis after all and even though I've never seen a successful breeding of concinnus without brumation, (even though males try out of season, the females just don't cooperate) it's been known to happen with CA red sideds. Just clarify, what red sided to you have? parietalis or infernalis? Jeff has some excellent parietalis for sale but they might be out of your price range, especially using Fedex for shipping.

Buy from someone on the forum. They are trusted members of our family and will support you and your snakes.

before we go any further, he lives in the same town a Scott Felzer.

How convenient is that?

Holy crud! There's your answer buddy. Go for it. I simply can't afford his prices even for something as common as an iowa albino radix. $110 shipped is just a little too pricey for me but if all I had to do was drive and pick them up, now that would be awesome. There would probably be no need to buy any of the species/morphs he carries from anyone else!

He sells his het "normals" for roughly $40

That litter I just produced was from a pair of snakes that cost me very little to obtain.

The Fed Ex was more than the snakes were.

At the time, I had never seen a Radix in person before, I didn't care if they were het for anything or not, I just wanted some Radix.

Now I have so many I forget the exact number.

Nothing like Steve by a long shot, that would be almost impossible, but quite a few nonetheless.

Gosh, how many do you think I have? It's not that many.
There's still more outside than in my house, so far.:D I think!

Do you have a fence around your yard,Steve?
So we could call it an outdoor enclosure!
Maybe itīs not as escape proof as we normally think about an enclosure, but...

Are you kidding? What garter in it's right mind would ESCAPE from Steve? Radixes all over the world should be flocking to live in Steve's yard. Prime property right there, and free food. :D

Wow..Scott Felzer seems like the way to go.:D I had found that website before but had no idea he was in my city! He is sold for the season though...but I think I'll just wait until he's in stock. I also had no idea he was so well-known.

Only one of the best. And yes, he sells out fast and the season is over but he starts having litters very early in the year.

Well, I already have a pair of green and gold 2010 radixes from Don. The mother is a red plains, the father is het for Iowa and Nebraska albino so there's only a small chance that these two aren't het for something. They're growing fast so that'll be a future project. I'll breed them together and see what pops out.

My problem is I have an '09 iowa albino male (het for nebraska and christmas) but I intended to get a female. He's over a year old now and pretty darn big. Now where the heck am I going to get a female iowa het at least, that is big enough to breed him to? You wouldn't have anything like that available, would you wayne? Last I checked, he was around 20 inches but he's probably bigger now. Money is tight!

They don't escape. They go for a walk and then beg to be let back in at the screen door!
