This is LG(Lucky's girl) She is gravid and we are expecting babies soon.
From the looks of that belly and the scale spread it could be anytime now.
I don't have a conception date so any time goes.
LG is a very aggressive feeder and has been placed with this large group to calm her down.

The photo is deceiving. She's a first time mom. She's not a full adult yet.
Her being gravid was a surprise and a pleasant one at that. I hoped to breed her this Spring with a male of my choice but she had other ideas.
In any event her babies will be very welcome here on the Ranch.

lol I bet, both my females had babies this past summer and it was unexpected, mind you they were in with a male and it was bound to happen but none of them were quite a year old yet. so it did come to quite a surprise, and i expected Tina to be the only one to pop but they both did.

I havn't had any problems with it either, I take photo's with my cell and upload them to photobucket with their Android app. Makes life much easier, I hate being unorganized... computer things anyway... rather not go through hundreds of pix or songs not being able to find something, when you know it's there.

Here's a few from the birthing time.
This first photo shows a shed starting on the head and just behind that the egg sack. The second photo is my favorite. This little one was holding his head up taking in some air.
These snakes had more blood in their cords than any other babies I've ever seen. The cords were large and full.

I offered some food to the babies today. None of them would come out of their hide to try it so I put the food under the hide.
30 minutes later the dish was empty. Not everyone ate but there were a number of full bellies. I'll try again tomorrow.

Weird. I've said it before, the only baby garters ever born under my care were ordinoides and concinnus and that's been many times. None of them have ever eaten or showed any interest before days 7-12.
Those garbage gut radixes don't waste any time do they?

Thats interesting! I would become nervous, if the whole of a cluth refuse eating for two weeks. I use to offer first feed at the second or third day of life to my offspring and expect 60 to 90% success.

You know, I keep hearing that, but much as I expected, even though I offered, none of the concinnus or ordinoides babies took food before day 6 this year, and that was only 2 or 3 of them. The rest took food during days 7-12. I haven't actually kept track of the one's that didn't make it, but so far I'd say around 70% have survived that I know of. The few that have died right here under my care were small and weak right from the start.
The small concinnus litter I had (only 7 babies) were born exceptionally large. They showed no interest in food before day 14. Only lost one of those. The other litters, born much smaller, have caught up to them in size since then.

My runt marcianus was so shy he would have to be left in seclusion with his food before he would eat an then he would only eat afew bites. Well he's still the runt but of course he gets my special attention! I was scared he would not make it for awhile but he seems quite strong now. hope yours does the same!

I've received a baby snake or two that was like that. I had no trouble at all getting them to eat dead fish (silversides pieces). The way I did it was to wait until they are hunkered down in their favorite hide, in privacy, and put the food in there with them.

I need to find out what bait shops carry the silversides which are bigger and hopefully then it'll git bigger and easier to feed other things. It's just slow progress.
ConcinusMan
11-28-2010, 02:32 PM
I have some huge silversides right now, average size about 10 inches.(arctic pond smelt) San Fransisco Bay Brand - Sally's silversides. Comes in a flat, packed in water so they stay nice and fresh. They smell and look better than most other brands I can buy, and they are very big. Many of the fish are loaded with eggs too. Snakes seem to like them better than other brands.
HazAnga
11-28-2010, 03:10 PM
could those be purchased at a Metro or something like that... the only thing is that this runt is maybe double the size of a newborn... so large guppies would be perfect... but i don't have any and they can be hard to come by...
ConcinusMan
11-28-2010, 03:27 PM
I was wondering why you were insisting on a bait shop. Their "silversides" are often contaminated with parasites and other nasties, sick fish, and they often don't even know what species of fish they are selling, or they are actually a mixture of several fish. There's only one "silverside" that's safe for garters and those are arctic pond smelt.
I get mine at a pet store freezer. They are intended for feeding predatory aquarium fish and so are disease free and healthy fish. Can't say that about a bait shop.

Tonight I took 2 small night crawlers and cut them up for the babies.
I put it under their hide and waited about 5 minutes.
With my camera in hand I moved the hide to fined.............. all the food gone and full bellies on most of the scrubs. I should have cut more worms.
These babies are doing great. Another week and they will have to start coming out for food. Most will start hand feeding in the next few week.

It's still happy times for me. I wish I knew what was wrong with the little scrub.
I hate to lose any of them.
Thinking back to the birthing time I remember seeing a baby in the enclosure. I grabbed a container to collect them up. I didn't remove LG from her enclosure so there were 9 other adult females in with her at birthing time.
I put the first one in the container and found a couple up in the plastic vines. I then checked under the cold hide. In with the adults were these little ones.
I told them they couldn't keep the babies and they would have to give them up. I got a big smile out of seeing those babies in amongst those big girls. I should have taken a picture of it.
Looked like a bunch of grandmothers looking after the grand kids.:D

About radix babies... I got a couple of double hets from Don and one of the two was only barely noticeably smaller than the other. The smaller one being the male. Well, they both eat well but for some reason, the female has really grown like crazy and is now about twice the size of the male. I have only raised one other baby radix and that would be the '09 iowa albino "Amy" (also from Don) Amy is definitely grown up now, about 2 feet.
Is this unusual Steve? I mean two babies eating well but one growing so much faster? I ask because I notice some size differences in that litter. I'm wondering why my male is lagging so far behind his sister. Amy grew big and fast and is the only other male radix I've raised. This new male just isn't growing much, although he's strong and healthy. He's the one in my video with the bad attitude. His sister now makes him look so puny in comparison but when I got them, they were nearly the same size.

Nothing unusual about that. I've seen it in litters before. I've also seen the opposite.
A group of het. albinos have most of the males out growing the female. I think in time that will change and the girls will pull ahead.
