View Full Version : Very Therapeutic

For me the keeping of garter snakes is not only a joy but it's also very therapeutic. Whether it's working with a group of adults or a group of newborns. The feeding and handling is calming and a pleasure. To watch these wild animals learn to trust and eventually seem to enjoy the interaction is satisfying.
I spent this afternoon feeding babies. The two groups of 30 where amazing. Most waited to be fed but they also did some free-feeding.
There wasn't a single food fight as the process was easy. I've got a few shy ones in these groups and they still don't want to get too close to me. For those snakes food is delivered. They stick their head out of the hide for a bite. Then I have the ones who refused to eat from the dish as long as I am there. They come up to me, resting their heads on my arm. Then they wait patiently for me to deliver a few worm chunks. I know most of these snakes very well and recognize their individual attitudes.
I'm sure they don't know how much good I am getting from them.

I feel the same way Steve, however I still have a few who would rather take their siblings food than find their own!

Well, today was worms and that usually means a pretty orderly time. Had it been pinky parts the groups would have been a little more, how do I say it? excited.:D

Although the snakes wont tell I hope they´re enjoying feeding time like we do.

Steve, your starting post sounds a little bit like a romantic soap...
... and the sunset was red and gold... :D;):D

Thanks Udo.
Maybe I should contact Hollywood to see if they want to do a reality TV show about the T.radix Ranch.
It would feature all the drama and suspense, all the ups and downs of Ranch life. It could be called
"The real life of the Radix Ranch Radixes"

It was a long night. I had a restless snapping turtle(Tank). He wanted to stay up after lights out.

Tonight, Tank is in bed like a good snapping turtle.
I guess a belly full of pinkies is a good turtle sleep aid.
It also works well on snakes.:D

I also find keeping these fascinating animals very calming and pleasurable.

Although there are moments when it's frustrating.

Whether I'm feeling bored and restless, or downright depressed, I go to my garter snakes and they always do something to make me smile, even if it's nothing but sitting there basking and interacting with themselves.:)

I guess a belly full of turkey does the same to humans ( if it´s not too much;)).

I always have to finish my work prior to starting "snake watch" otherwise I would get lost in time:D

I got news for you, stop blaming the turkey. I hate baked turkey and didn't touch a bite of it. I served turkey but I only ate honey baked ham and prime rib, and I was just as sleepy as everyone else in the house this past thursday!
