Can i put an eastern garter of the same size in with my red sided garter? Will they get along? Can they live together?

Yes, or no...

It will depend on the snakes.

Put them together and keep an eye on them.

If one or the other acts "all stressed out" or is pacing madly about, then separate them.

I have kept and do keep mixed sub species together, Just make sure they are same sex. That's another important thing to keep in mind. If you make a mistake on gender, then "Life will find a way" and you will wind up with some hybridized babies.

You could also post a photo and we'll try to help you out.
Check out that link Richard posted to see what photos you need to take.

Thanks, I'll post pics but i'm 99% sure he's male. I've researched it and I'm almost postive. He's small, his tail fits description,(and looks like the pics you just gave me) etc. etc.

(and when I said 'I know the sex of snakes???' a couple posts ago, I meant I dont know how to tell the sex. Sorry. Although I think you figured that out.

Sounds good. Glad that thread was helpful.

Pretty easy, especially when sexing adults, once you get the hang of it.

Sexing not a problem. Can any subspecies live together? Eastern black-necked etc.?

Keep them same sex and about same size.
Be sure to follow a quarantine period on the snakes that might be new.;)

Ok, any snakes.. gotcha. thinking about buying a black necked garter or a anerythristic red sided or something.

I would just be careful if youy get any wandering garters...they have been known to eat other snakes...rarely, but has happened. was a photo of a wandering eating a lined snake and I have seen them eat lizards

Black necked, whether cyrtopsis ocellatus or cyrtopsis cyrtopsis will probably have different temperature and/or humidity preferences than most garters due to their range and habitat. Although usually found at high altitude, they live in very dry forests or mesquite desert in the States, and easterns (ocellatus) can be found well south of the border in Mexico, in semi-tropical climates. That's something you need to keep in mind.

Yeah, I know about the caninbalisim of wandering garters, staying away from them.
So, is it not a good idea to put a black-necked with him? I just love the colors.
And are there any others I should be carefull of?

Sorry for all the questions, this is my first snake.

And what's that red one in your picture ConcinnusMan?

ConcinusMan

Erythristic Northwestern adult male. He's not mine, although I wish he was. I intend to return him to his owner after breeding with my red striped northwestern girl (hopefully) in the spring. She is brumating right now. I am holding off on brumating him until a bit later because he is rather thin. He's picky and only eats slugs. In spite of feeding him well nearly every day, he stays thin.

Ok, sweet. Only slugs? Is that the species or just him?

ConcinusMan
11-30-2010, 02:00 PM
Just him. He only eats slugs. I have some that eat slugs and worms, or worms only too. My CB babies eat fish, worms, or pinky parts. They aren't picky.

blacknecks should be fine... only cannibalism I've known was with wanderings. accidental cannibalism can happen if one snake smells like food (having crawled thru pieces of fish or food fight over a piece of fish). as long as they are close to the same size there should be no problem
no problem with all the questions! thats what we all are here for!

Dont put another snake with a wandering! They are cannabilistic!

It could mean death to both snakes. It's not worth the risk.

He should be fine with other wanderings around his size

I don't think the size matters. They can still swallow one another, or even a slightly larger snake, believe it or not.

have you had some issues with them? I have been keeping groups of adults together all this summer....

Twice. Was keeping two vagrans and a tetrataenia in the same enclosure a couple of years ago. Everything had gone well for almost a year and then suddenly the smallest vagrans tried to kill the tetra, which was noticably bigger. No food involved. Wrote it off as the snake being pregnant and just extra hungry and the vagrans ID:ing the tetra as a "legitimate target" because it was a different (read: prey) species.

4 months later one baby vagrans tried to kill its cagemate. No food involved.

I know at least one other European member, who's lost vagrans to vagrans without warning and after long-term cohabitation.

My solo snakes don't seem any more or less comfortable than my "group" snakes.

As long as "Little Sgt." has you, he's never alone ;)
