Well as I finally got the new inhabitants of my living room, I thought I could started a new thread about them. The first pictures of this post were already post on my enclosure's one. But I intend to make the future snake's updates here.

So tiny they are very hard to find (impossible on the first one) :

Thanks all.

They already are truly captivate me by their behavior, even if they rather like to hide into the plants at the hot spot (it's sometime quite a job to spot them all in their "jungle"). I believe they will need some times to feel safer.

Few time ago two of them were to at the hot spot right under thermometer's probe (~30°C)

So yesterday it was the orange one (last pic of the first set of this thread) who get the adventuring spirit.

Today it was this one who start exploring and past the afternoon next to the door.

Sounds like they are keeping busy.
Garter snakes don't like just sitting around. That's one of the reasons I like them.
Did I say like! I meant love.

10-27-2010, 08:56 PM
Mine like to just sit around... That's all they ever do. That, and eat.
... And poop... :D

Mama's the laziest of them all, just hangin' out. She's been a bit antsy the past few days, though.

A little update, its as been a week since they arrived. All of them ate, even if the smaller one ate less than the others. They passed most of their time into the plants (especially the biggest one), but yesterday, while coming back from work, they were all on the ground exploring their environment, it is very pleasant to see them moving around.

The biggest one (I will name them soon ;)) seems close to her first shed since in my care. She just ate ˝ worms yesterday, while she is normally the biggest eater and I think her eyes are more cloudy than before.

I will post other pictures if I can get some tonight.

Finally I will have to wait for pictures. Yesterday, I had my shinkendo class and the lights were closed when I arrive. The biggest one don't seems to shed after all, there was a mirage cause by light reflexion. Where does the shed start normally? It seem one of them as the tip of her tail more drab that the rest of her body, don't know if it is a shed. Anyways, I will try to pose them as soon as possible.

guidofatherof5
11-04-2010, 08:59 AM
Normally they start shedding at the head.
They will rub their chin to catch it on something rough. Then the rostral(nose, snout). Once they have both of those peeled back to the neck they simply catch the top or bottom shed on something and crawl out of it.
That's a normal case scenario.
Low humidity can cause it to come off in pieces.

ConcinusMan
11-04-2010, 02:51 PM
So can poor nutrition, regardless of the humidity. Causes the skin to be very thin and fragile, making it come off in "shreds".

Wow, great enclosure! You did a fantastic job (really did your homework) and goodluck with your new little ones. ;-)

Barak666
11-06-2010, 01:50 PM
Well, none of them seems to shed after all, guess they need to get some more reserves before it happen. They all get a good appetite, 1 hour ago they engulf 1 earthworm each (that's why they are quite plump on the following pictures).

Since 2-3 days they are lot more active and I never know in which corner of the enclosure they will be.

The pictures are easier to take while they digest than "running" true their enclosure.

(the glass frame is 1˝" wide, it give an idea of the animal's size)

I didn't take any more pictures yet, but I put a bunch of guppies in their new water bowl (ceramic pie plate instead of Pirex, who seems to disturbs the snakes as they don't know and realize what glass is).

It didn't take long before one of them jump in the fray by eating 2-3 guppies, then he goes back on top at hot point. While he climb he way up, he cross road with the orange one, who was in its way down. This one, once down to the plate, did the same thing as people do when swimming, it dip the tip of it's head, then retreat, then dip a little more, retreat, then again, ... etc, before trowing itself to swim a bit and before charging the helpless guppies.

Was a nice moment of observation, since its the second time I put guppies, and just one was eaten the first time.

The third one was on the opposite side of the enclosure, next to the deer's scull trying to keep an eye on me while trying to conceal itself (didn't work well this time ;))

Their is more action in this enclosure than in my water dragon's enclosure, its a pleasing change.

http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/Barak_666/couleuvres060.jpg

While this time, Guy was on the run, and came quickly to inspect this strange devise, sorry for the poor quality of the last ones, my old 5Mpx isn't suit to focus on an approaching snake. But it give a view of is back's color (who change from blue to green depending of the angle)

http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/Barak_666/couleuvres064.jpg

My girlfriend, who loves blue/green garter, is pretty happy, moreover it is "Guy" who have these colors. We give him the name of Guy because my girlfriend's father had a grave road accident (it happen in end of september and he is still at the hospital, but on the good way to heal without to much sequels) at the same moment that we get the snakes. We named it during the car trip between Montreal hospital and here (800km) with the snakes that we pick at Charles place. So for all these reason I think this one is her favorite In my case, I love them all three, with tin preference for the dark orange one

He is very pretty. Judging from the very distinct border on the yellow lower parts, I take it he's a flame? I know, not red, not high-end, but isn't that the flame gene that does that?

Well, few things news, last week-end, I didn't saw the orange one for all day, at first I said to myself :"she find a very good hiding!" But after a complete day without seeing it, I started to wonder myself if it could have escape.

I then turn every part of the enclosure without seeing it, my stress was rising fast. After stressing the other two snakes by turning every things upside down, I started to look on the floor, under the furniture, then I saw a movement in the radiator. It was there, it was moving in it. So I was able to push it into a fish net. What a relieve. Once it was back into the enclosure, I try to figure how it escape, the only possibility was the glass door (otherwise everything is seal in epoxy) then a notice that the right sliding door tend to let a small gap on the top of it (glass is 2 feet high) so I guess the snake just climb into the windows track and then find the small hole.

Hopefully they all eat well, so I guess in few time they will be to large for climbing into the glass track. But now I take a special precaution to ensure the door is well close each time I open/close it.

They already eat earthworms and guppies with appetite, then I try the pinkies yesterday, I chopped them in three parts each (for a total of 9 pinkies parts), I didn't scent them with worms or guppies, and it would have been useless as they go straight for it without questions. "Guy" is the one who discovered the plate in the first place, so it engulf 5 pinkie part, the other two got 2 part each. It was pretty funny to see them trying to eat the plate where the eaten parts were.

I didn't take pictures of this moment, I was to captivating by there behaviour to leave the room to take my camera :D maybe next time.

Here a pic of the orange one taken few days back. It is the one who look the more like her parents.

... Man how is the weather are you in the emergency zone!!??

Hopefully, I'm not. For those outside of Quebec, the weather here is abnormally warm for this part of year, the seasonal normal is -4°C to -12°C and from the beginning of December we have temperature range from -2°C to 15°C. So what is suppose to fall as snow fall as rain. The consequence is that the rivers of the region overflow as in spring. Here in Haute-Gaspésie we are less touch by that than Gaspé (5 evacuations here compare to few hundred there)

The other problem is the absence of ice on the St-Lawrence Golf (to warm for ice) combine to the December high tides and the North-east wind who blows up to 110 km/h last week-end. All these factors combine together lead to the exceptional tide erosion we had (mostly the 6-7 December) but the 21-22 are going to be the highest tides of the month (here 3.3 meters), that alone is impressive, but when the 4 to 6 meters waves come into play, it is devastating for the coast (who is normally protect by the ice cover). This combination of elements is rare, the last souvenir I got was 6 years ago, and it was less destructive that this time. To give you an idea, the coastal road (main road) was cut in half at some place by the tide/waves and many coastal houses were floods (if not completely destroyed). A pal of mine just lose 15 feet of is terrain. In my case I'm not directly affect by that, but some people here are going to have a hard Christmas.

To come back to the snakes ;) here another picture of the orange one (the only one active yesterday, while the others two bask to digest all day long).

http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/Barak_666/couleuvres099.jpg

And I was wondering something. If I keep cleaning, feeding etc without trying to touch them, will they come to trust me (my hands) and came to me willingly? Cause went it is for feeding etc it is alright, but if my hand come to close of them they flee rapidly into the plants where they crawl around the stems so I'm not able to taken them (don't want to stress them to much by force taking them).

I'm back from Montreal, where we went for Noël et Jour de l'An. My father took care of my littles beasts during my absence. Everything went alright, except that they always hide from him, he wasn't able to see more that 2 at the time. He fear one of them fled, but they show themselves when I arrived (I found a few shed soon after).

Here they are while I bring them a plate of worms.

They saw me coming :) ... (I try to get their 3 heads the best my camera can, Jaunas is nearly not visible in the down right corner)

http://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac44/Barak_666/couleuvres108.jpg

Barak666
02-02-2011, 07:47 AM
Well, long time no see. All of my little beasts do well. They continue to grow (I recently compare their last shed with the first one they had in my care, and by comparing them, it is obvious they grow. They are close to 8 month's old now. I still feed them every two days, mostly with nightcrawlers (dust with calcium and vitamins from time to time) and guppies from time to time (I tried the mice pinkies and they eat them too, but they are harder to come by, so it is not their main diet). So they pass most of their time basking digesting, and once they start exploring (food hunt, normally the second day after eating) I feed them and they go back to the basking spot. So they are not very active and I don't see them pretty often (at least not easily).

When should I start to space out the lunches?

For sexing, is it doable with a shed? Cause I'm not able to catch and hold them (I don't try very hard, since I prefer not to stress them unnecessarily), they got to much hides and they seems to know when my hand is going after them (if it goes for the food plate or the water bowl, they are not afraid of it, but if it goes for them, they rapidly flee undercover).

And for the eyes, a picture of Jaunas taking a nap using a bone (jaw) as pillow. We don't see it in the picture, but the rest of his body is inside the cranial box (take me time to spot his little head)

I'm liking Scott's prices on flames this year. Getting much more into the reasonable range. Just might get at least one if they don't disappear too fast. I wouldn't necessarily demand a high end flame. I like your orange one there too. (Guy)

I had a first handling of Orange today, I caught it on the act of fleeing by the gap between the two glasses doors, (I fill must of it, but there was a tiny hole left in the top and he reach it by compressing himself against the two doors (where they overlap,it is now secure)). So I wait for him to get out, then I caught it and put him back in the enclosure, he was stress of being held but was calming down when I let it go(didn't restrain it,he was roaming in hand hands and he didn't musk).

So Orange, is still pretty active, in fact I didn't really see the other two last week. But today "guy" was active, I caught it in a weird position, Was lucky enough to have the camera close, so here is Guy climbing.

The best I can get of it tails, possible to sex with it? The fact that Guy and Jaunas, outgrow Orange, let me think Guy and Jaunas might be femal while Orange a boy. If I happen to be able to take picture of every one tail I wil post them here.

The underside of the tail at the vent would be great.
I'm leaning towards "girl" but will hold out for a better photo.;)
Whatever the sex, beautiful snake.

Long time no see.

Since the last update, Orange almost disappears, a chance I spot it some times, otherwise I would have thought it fled the enclosure. Guy and Jaunas are more active. Fews weeks ago I feed them mice pinky, they seems to have like it, cause since then they refuse the night crawlers. The problem is the pinkies are hard to come by here, so I chop some of the pinkies I had left and I use it to scent the worms, so far its work.

At first I put the worms or the pinkies in a plate and they had a day to eat, but on the Charles's advise, I start feeding them with tongs for them to associate me with food. So far it work, at least with Guy and Jaunas who fear less my hands. While presenting a worm to Jaunas yesterday, it ignore the worm, climb the tongs and my hand, it explore the top of my hand, he even enter his head in my fist before turning back to his branch, the trusted start to build up :D. So I hope in few weeks to be able to handled them and take picture of the underside for sexing ... slowly but surely.

Since the moment where I need to separate them arrive fast I am looking to make a simple enclosure for the one I will be obligate to take of the main enclosure. I might have found an empty aquarium of 20" X 10" X 15" (LxlxH), can a garter have a good life in an enclosure of this size? The best would be to keep them together in the big enclosure, but I'm probably not lucky enough to have three snakes of the same sex ... future will tells.

Two pictures taken yesterday

Jaunas (the biggest one)

Wow, I just saw that my last update was almost a year ago, time pass with lightning speed ...

So I'm still alive and my little beasts too. I had some feeding problems in the beginning of winter as Guy stop eating. I don't have an empty fridge to brumate them so I try to make it eat. It refuse every worms I gave to him, until I was able to put my hands on mice pinkies. I used them to scent the worm and it worked on the first try. Since them he get his appetite back. They all eat 2-3 big nightcrawlers every 2-3 days. They continue to grows, shed, eat and s**t. They are pretty active and, as always, its a pleasure to watch them go around their little world. I recently add some fake flower to add some colours and some more space for them to explore. They are now close to 2 feet long and are able to climb every part of their enclosure pretty fast. I did not take many picture, but here some few taken during the lasts weeks/months. Guy and Orange are easiest to picture as they go out more often during day time than Jaunas (who is more active once the lights are off).
