hello all i am new here and have been looking around and have not seen any really good sites for garter snakes and i stumbled accross this one while using google there seems to be alot of knowledgable and experienced people here. i only got into this since my 4 year old daughter was camping with us and my nephew found a garter snake she got so excited and asked if we could bring her home so i agreed it was ok for a month or 2 and then return it to the wild again well i came home one night a few weeks after bringing the snake home and to my surprise was greeted with 10 more babies in the tank well i thought it was just a really healthy snake but it was pregnant so i did what i was originally planning i released momma snake 2 months after i caught her and some friends who have snake experience had asked if they could have a few so i thought what the heck sure. i even kept a few my self and plan on building a bigger enclosure for them cause of all the snakes i have seen and handled garters are the best bu8t to sum it all up great site and i had great success with all the babies as they are all still alive and healthy and active and i frequently check up on all of them its nice to see a community like this with such dedication to what some people call a lesser snake give the garter a chance they are way cooler than most snakes around.

We would love to see some pictures, when you get around to it.
What are you feeding your snakes?

Welcome! What a nice thing to say about our forum. Same thing happened to me with my first garter since being a kid last year. Husband found large garter on Mother's Day while mowing. Thought she was either just a "fat snake" or could be gravid. Then, one day in August, we came home to 11 squiggles in the tank! I still have Mom and 6 of her offspring. Plus a few others now:D
Babies usually take readily to salmon as well and for an overall diet, slip in some pinkie parts.
Also, as a forum requirement, we need PICTURES!!!

and here is the one we rescued from a cat before he got hurt i couldn't let the cat kill him i'm just not that heartless. this one likes to play peekaboo with me alot hes got so much personality and took so well to being in a tank i was rather amazed.

nap time with them is my favorite they always use that climb to sleep on they never hide and they have lots of places to hide and the bigger snake i just couldn't let a cat kill it since i find it to be a very beautiful snake.

Welcome aboard, Mr. Evil;)
May I guess, that you are living in Quebec, New Brunswick or Nova Scotia?
Your snakes are looking like Thamnophis sirtalis pallidulus.
Sorry, looking like beautiful specimens of Thamnophis sirtalis pallidulus!
