View Full Version : Picky Little Princess!
Ever since I've had 'Lily, she has munched up her trout with gusto. Loved it.
But now? Oh no, all of a sudden she turns her nose up at that stuff! It just HAS to be mackerel!
Well, whatever my little princess wants; even if mackerel happens to be the only fish I can't get pre-filleted :( Mama doesn't mind chopping off fish heads.
I'm now going to have to get some salmon, I think, so she has some more variety. Hopefully that will be acceptable to her taste. ;)
See how her training's coming along? I'm doing well, aren't I?!

It's good you know your place.:D
Are you feeding any night crawlers?
I'm not entirely sure what nightcrawlers are - similar to earthworms? I don't know if we can get those over here?
She's only interested in fish (and starting to get picky with that, it seems), so I'm feeding f/t fish and calcium/vit supplement.

I know that other members in your neck of the woods use night crawlers. They can be purchased at bait shops.
Do you have any ASDA stores in your area. I believe they are affiliated with Walmart.
Make sure you are buying the right worms. Red worms or compost worms are toxic to garter snakes.
Lumbricus terrestris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumbricus_terrestris)
I had heard that bait worms can be raised in chemical-contaminated conditions? There is actually a fishing shop not far from my home, so I'll go have a chat and check it out.
Asda doesn't sell anything like that, unfortunately - Walmart has a much bigger range of things on sale! I was in northern California in august, and was amazed when I went into the local Walmart - they're huge! Even compared to my Asda, which is (supposedly) the largest in the country.
But I will go down to the fishing shop and check it out. Thanks! :)

What you're looking for is lobworms  ie - normal earthworms. Worms Direct UK - worms for fishing, fishing bait, worms for bait, Dendrobaena for fishing, fishing bait wholesalers (http://www.wormsdirectuk.co.uk/acatalog/Lobworms.html)
But, essentially, presenting a mixed platter of mackerel and trout or salmon with pinkies should eventually do the trick. Simply gradually reduce the amount of mackerel in the dish.
Tesco do value packs of salmon fillet which I portion off and freeze ;).
Ok. Earthworms can be done! We don't use pesticides in our garden (only used organic flant feed on the veggies), so I'll have to go hunting; or then again, I could be lazy and buy 'em in! ;)

Okay, now I'm freaking out about the type of worms I've caught out of my garden.. Trying to look up how to tell the safe worms apart from the non-safe worms and having no luck. Any suggestions?

red worms - Google Search (http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&expIds=17259,18167,20782,24472,25984,26095,26562,2 6885,27014&sugexp=ldymls&xhr=t&q=red+worms&cp=7&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1010&bih=567)
Red worms are small and tend to be red colored and have visible rings of color.
Earthworms and night crawlers are larger and fleshy pink colored.

I usually find 2 types of worms in my yard.
Night Crawlers and what I call earth worms.
More frequently will digging for worms I find earthworms.
Small in comparison to a night crawler, they are also a pale color. Even their band up by the head is pale colored.
Compost(red worms) worms are just that. Usually found in compost. They have easy to see bands around their bodies. They also secrete a yellow liquid when threatened.
I will go grab a few earthworms out of my yard and post a photo.
Back in a few minutes.
Here's an earthworm, as I call them.

I've never seen an earthworm like that! But maybe in my area we just have more night crawlers, that seems to be what I always find. When we went worm hunting we only found tiny baby night crawlers.

Well darn. I have some of each. At least I have a fisher friend who will take the red ones. Probably could talk him into bringing me a fish or two in exchange even...
This is pretty much what the ones here look like:

I don't know anything about the worms in your country. I'm sure someone else can identify it for you.
I mean, I know that's an earthworm over here. :) Was posting it so other Brits know.

we call those angleworms out here...tons of them. never seen any secrete anything. they are good for the smaller snakes due to their size. the earthworms or nightcrawlers are big and have purple/red heads. I buy lots of them at Walmart for feeding...been a dry summer here and haven't found a lot. I have found the red wigglers in Idaho....behind a friends house by a pond with salamanders. they live where the nightcrawlers don't....I have never seen them in the wild like that before.....
here's a link with a couple photos of them from here in Utah...

I know what you're saying Don. Those angleworms as you call them(never heard that term until now) will work on some babies when night crawlers won't.
I've always called them earthworms. Not sure if either of us is right. Finding them is always a good thing, what ever they are.
