Gah! Why didn't anyone warn me that watching my snake hunt live fish was possibly the coolest thing ever?! Quite messy though, lots of splashing around. Once he's had a couple hours to digest I'll have to move him and clean his cage again.
I do have to ask, as an elegans snake he's supposed to want to eat other snakes, yes? What if the other garter were bigger than him though? Yes, this is the just one more thing going on, but... he's just so cool! They will be in a 29 gallon tank, with the floor space being a foot by two and a half feet. There will be plenty of climbing and hiding areas as well, so they'd both have plenty of room. Of course, if St. George actually is a male he might not want another male in his territory, and I don't want to breed. Is that something to worry about with garters?

I've never had a problem having more than one male in the enclosure, some are very welcoming to having a buddy. Some garters don't like having other snakes in with them and will become nervous and may develop a bad appetite. If you do put two in the enclosure I'd say watch them for an hour and if anything seems wrong, take one out and perhaps keep it in a different enclosure. They do need a few days to settle in, though so keep that in mind with St. George, don't try anything too fast as it may make him uncomfortable.

Well, I would want a different kind for a second, so it would likely have to wait until next year sometime when the weather warms up enough that I could have one shipped to me. Course, then what if they didn't get along? I'd have two snakes and 1 viv. Hmm.. I'll have to think on that over the winter I suppose.

All of mine have taken to each other quite admirably. However, you having the wandering garter, I believe, which is cannabilistic, he may be persuaded to share his home with another, if only to have him/her for dinner later on!

Yeah, that's something I am worried about with him.. Especially since he just got 5 fish and is practically begging me to give him more. How many are too many? Do I want to go out and get him some worms to finish his meal off with? Gah! Up until now this whole snake thing was seeming so much easier than other pets I've had...

It is pretty easy. Give him some worms or more fish or salmon. He'll be happy. He's not starving, so it can wait until tomorrow. You just fed him 5 fish. They will always give you the "Can't you see I'm starving and wasting away to nothing?" look.

He was just curled up in the dish, looking around like "what, that's it? That wasn't even worth coming up here!"
Worms tomorrow then, if he'll eat them. It'll be our first time with worms, since I've been giving him mostly slugs. The annoying things are all over our garden. And this week I'll be picking up calcium supplement for him. Do I need anything else while I'm at the pet store?

If he likes slugs, I would collect as many as you can for the winter. They are easy to keep, you can pm me if you like and I'll be happy to tell you how. They are also rich in calcium from what I read. Any kind of variation of food is good. That way when they refuse one, you can switch to another. And let me tell you, they will stick their snakey noses up at the very best of food when they feel like it! Spoiled snakes:D
