today I was supposed to ship babies to Steve, and I already feel like crying
I hate shipping snakes already, but some research shows that none of the carriers officially ship snakes any more. Fedex - no animals at all; UPS's list follows:
This is a comprehensive list of live animals accepted for transportation. Shippers are prohibited from shipping any animal not listed here, and all other live animals will not be accepted for transportation. The following live animals are accepted for transportation unless poisonous, venomous, and/or a Threatened or Endangered Species.
Amphibians (All): Examples: frogs, salamanders, toads
Crustaceans (All): Examples: crabs, crawfish, lobsters, shrimp
Fish (All)
Insects (Limited to beneficial insects only): Examples: bees, butterflies, crickets, lady bugs
Mollusks (All): Examples: clams, mussels, snails
Reptiles (Limited to the following):
- Lizards: Examples: chameleons, geckos, iguanas, monitors, flying dragons
- Turtles: freshwater turtles (except: snapping turtles), land tortoises, sea turtles
Worms (All)
Prohibited Live Animals
Live Animals that are prohibited from being shipped and are not accepted for transportation include, but are not limited to:
Any poisonous, venomous or threatening animal
Any Threatened or Endangered species
Arachnids (All): Examples: mites, scorpions, spiders, ticks
Birds (All)
Crocodiles (All): Examples: alligators, caimans, gavials
Mammals (All)
Obnoxious Insects: Examples: flies, locusts, mosquitoes, roaches, termites, weevils
Snakes (All): venomous and non-venomous
are these regulations the reason shipyourreptiles.com was having some troubles? I heard something, not sure what. was there a snake escape or some such thing?
They do use UPS though, so I'll have to find out more, since that's the only other option I can think of at the moment

If shipping isn't already very pricey, then you have to use a special carrier that charges even more.
No fear. When I hit the lottery I'm going to hand deliver snakes to all who want them.
Of course, it might help if I start playing the lottery.:D

When I hit the lottery I'm going to hand deliver snakes to all who want them.
When I win the lottery, I'm going to hand deliver them to EVERYBODY.
Of course, it might help if I start playing the lottery.:DSame here, but I figure the chances of winning the lottery even once in your lifetime are about the same, whether or not you actually play.
It would still be interesting to hear how exactly they're rationalizing those limitations.

You can get certified by fed ex to ship reptiles with them
UPS allows people to ship lizards, turtles and tortoises but they do not allow shipments of snakes. (hence it is not illegal to do so, just against policy)
The only one where is is actually illegal to ship snakes is by Postal Service.
There are services that can allow you to ship snakes with UPS in compliance with their policy, such as reptile express which has an agreement with the UPS corporate office. Another company (ship your reptiles) once said they had a similar such agreement with UPS which turned out to basically be lie.
You can read about all these companies, policies and how to get fed ex certified on Fauna Classifieds.
Cheers,
Kevin

Delta is bad news - Southwest is the airline of choice :)

Just to clarify why the company I work with does not use Delta any longer.
The straw that broke the camels back is when one of their employees stuck a reptile shipment of ours in the freezer because it was marked " turtles perishable"
The non english speaking contract employee thought "oh perishable, I'll put it in the freezer" but there is a difference between live perishable and perishable.
No matter if his intentions were good or not, it's just an unacceptable misunderstanding
Home - Reptiles Express - Discounted UPS Shipping Labels and Reptile Shipping Supplies (http://www.reptilesexpress.com/)
Here is the link for reptiles express. I have not used them but I think overall people are happy with them. It is your best option for shipping today!
The FedEx process can be painless (it was for me) or depending on your rep and who you speak to painful!
Good luck!

The shipping situation is pathetic right now. Even when it's not, the prices are ridiculous to do it all legit and legal like.
Someone who isn't necessarily me, and other breeders that might do business here skip all the bullship and use USPS Express shipping in spite of the law that the feds basically imposed on them without their say-so after 9-11. Even USPS has taken an attitude of "don't ask, don't tell". They don't ask if there is anything live in the package, and you shouldn't tell. They only ask if there is anything potentially hazardous, fragile, or perishible. If you answer "no" to these questions, then everything is fine. They don't even allow perishables any more! I say screw that. Just answer no.
I can tell you that shipments, if packaged right, arrive safe and sound consistently (I hear ;)) and it's much more reasonably priced.
They are fully aware that people still ship live and that's why they don't ask. They will however open packages that generate heat, cold, or move.

I asked a postal person I was chatting with about those laws, and they told me it's because of something they do to the packages. I forget what it was, but it seemed not worth risking.

Horse pucky. He's probably talking about irradiation but they only do that for international mail. It's perfectly safe to ship them domestic overnight (Express Mail). A well insulated sturdy container is recommended. Someone who isn't necessarily me has never had a snake arrive dead or injured in any way, out of many shipments even if they had to go coast to coast.
