Yeah my infernalis is a little "nippy" but his attitude gives him his personality. Hopefully, I can get him some female couter parts this summer. This species is so cool, but I have not had the best of luck with young animals, so I hope to turn it all around this year and get some females growing so I can make some of my own.

Pics of my Radix, I just have 3 so far. They were bought from Shane Castello, and he said the albinos were produced by Don, maybe he can confirm this. The normal is an adult WC female who gave birth to a neat little male that looks like Scott's "aztecs". The little male is living with a friend of mine, but will be bred back to his mom and sister when the time comes.

I don't know about confirming but Jason, my female orange nebraska from Don looks exactly like yours. She continues to get more orange with each shed. Can't wait to see what she looks like as an adult. Should be stunning!
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/1021/xmas015large.jpg

I'm really liking the snakes Don is putting out lately. Somehow he managed to use descendants of Scotts Christmas albinos to get orange coming out in his T- and T+ albinos. I'm only now realizing that Amy (supposedly an Iowa, at least she looked like one at birth) a 2009 albino from Don, is what I would consider a "christmas". He is getting crazy orange. He's ready to breed but I don't have any females he can use just yet.

Amy as a baby:

He's about to shed again. I'm betting he'll have even more orange when finished. He's been rapidly coloring up lately. Don told me when I bought him that he carried the christmas genes but I had no idea he would color up as one.

Sorry, didn't mean to overload your thread with my pics, but I'm pretty excited about what's going on with the orange. It's awesome.

If you have any babies with those snakes tell me because I love snakes the most when they are tiny.

You might want to look into the smaller varieties of garters like Butlers Garters and IIRC Northwesterns.

My Butlers are full grown females, and they are only about 18-20 inches long, and weigh a fraction of my (still growing) Eastern. They are sweet tempered little things and they like to sit on their climbing branch and bask all day long.

ConcinusMan
07-20-2011, 04:39 PM
If you have any babies with those snakes tell me because I love snakes the most when they are tiny.

Then you would love northwesterns. They often stay very tiny and "baby-like" for quite a bit longer than other garters. My Miss piggy is a northwestern and has been an adult for a few years. She's still under 25 inches. I've seen females give birth to one or two babies when mom was less than 18 inches long.

kibakiba
07-20-2011, 04:45 PM
Yep northwesterns stay fairly small and grow very slowly. My 1 year old is only 6 inches :D

RedSidedSPR
07-20-2011, 06:03 PM
Ok that is just weird..... :D my redside and eastern are 8 and 7 inches ad they're 2 and 1 month old...

ConcinusMan
07-20-2011, 06:15 PM
I've seen small litters (less than 10 offspring) of T. sirtalis concinnus' born at around 7-10 inches and I've seen large litters of 30-50 of them born 5-7 inches. At the end of a year, they're all pretty much the same size. There doesnt' seem to be any advantage being born bigger or smaller other than a better survival rate among smaller litters.

All my northwestern litters have always been low numbers (1-7 offspring) AND small babies, 3-6 inches. At the end of a year, even they're thriving and growing well, they can still be only 6-7 inches at a year old. They are one species where size doesn't seem to matter an they are in no hurry to get big.

kibakiba
07-20-2011, 06:16 PM
Nope, Runt was only 4 inches at a year old. Thumbelina is a male, so he's growing faster than she did.

RedSidedSPR
07-20-2011, 06:17 PM
Wow. I knew northwesterns were small, but not THAT small

ConcinusMan
07-20-2011, 06:19 PM
A male, 18 month old adult capable of breeding can be as small as 14 inches. Females can be up to 3 years old, sexually mature and ready to breed, at only 16-18 inches. I'll bet my miss piggy at around 2 feet, is already 4-5 years old and has had several litters in her lifetime so far. She's big for a northwestern.

After about 25 years of herping, the largest female northwestern I ever found (just last summer) was 2.5 feet long. She was at the end of her life and unusually large. Nearly a foot longer than what they normally top out at.

The point is, Northwesterns are the smallest species of garter. Litters are small, they are born small, and they don't grow to adult size very fast. They take their time. And yet, they are the most commonly encountered reptile where they occur.

kibakiba
07-20-2011, 06:22 PM
Mama is about 1.5 feet, and 3-4 years. She's still growing a little bit, though.

Awesome! I was searching for those, and yellows like it, for quite some time but Don said he didn't have them anymore. Now you got one. Lucky dog!

I was fortunte enough to buy 6 of her offspring from this year, but dumb enough to sell them all!! So when I saw she was available, I had to have her. I also bought Tom's female that produced the yellow albino, so we will see... :D
