Hello to everyone here! I'm a new owner to a pair of garter snakes. While mowing my aunt and uncles lawn one day, I moved a pair of planters and found two small little snakes. After running around for a place to put them, I took them home and now intend to keep them as pets.

I read a couple of sites, and thought them to be corn snakes, but a friend told me other wise. I picked up some pinkies, but I think they might be a little to big for them, even though I cut them up. I'm most likely going to pick up some earthworms and feeder guppies tomorrow.

And now I guess for a pair of pictures of the two lil ones. I wonder though, if anyone could tell me if I am right in thinking that they are garters, and what gender are they?

I hope they are at least named right >.>

Welcome aboard. :) Nice pair of Storeria dekayi. Almost garters, but not quite. I'm pretty sure you can forget about the guppies, try slugs and worms.

Welcome....

You can forget pinkie mice too.

The primary diet is slugs/snails and earthworms.

They make fine captives, are really mellow and in time will eat right out of your hands.

You have adult snakes, they don't get very big, 18 inches is considered a huge dekayi.

Lifespan is only about 5-7 years in captivity, My oldest passed away at 7

Food is easy to find, flip over rocks and old logs, gather up free food.

Once you get them eating they will want to eat often.
They have the sweetest little faces when they beg. It's very hard to deny them food.............. OK, I can't deny them food.:D

I managed to find a few slugs and Dora seems to be eating just fine. Snorlax however, ate only one yesterday, and didn't want to eat any today. :(

Seems that slugs and earthworms are harder to find than one might expect, but I managed to find some deshelled snails on the petco website, would these make for a decent meal for my two lil ones?

Excellent name.

Hah, yeah I named him Snorlax, because, well, all he seems to do is sleep either under the hide, or under the bedding. He ate a snail or two before finally loosing interest in them. Dora on the other hand ate what he left, and is either in the hide or exploring her home.

Welcome from Connecticut. I have a Dekayi as well. I have also found it very difficult this season to find the slugs that my Dekayi prefers. Luckily, over the winter he "converted" to nightcrawlers. I would still like to give him his favorite though!
