My daughter, who is 11 is wanting to join the forum, but we're having trouble getting a permission slip to the appropriate person - so she's still not able to post.
In any case, she's spending the summer in Vermont and she was so excited yesterday because she caught a snake all by herself! She wanted me to post a picture for her (not the best shot, but I'm not there to redirect the camera :D)
She believes it's a female eastern, possibly gravid.
Here's the piccy!

That's awesome!
There is something *very8 satisfying about catching a wild snake, weather or not you intend to keep it! I hope she (Or one of her possible babies) turns out to be a 'keeper'.

Well, I was surprised and impressed that she caught it even though it was very aggressive, bit her twice- good enough to make her bleed quite a bit. She didn't even notice till later. That's my girl!

Sounds like she needs to meet my Gabby(age11). They would be a couple snake catching machines.:D

She's in Vermont at the moment, visiting gandparents for the summer. And so, she really has no idea how she would possibly transport it home (we live in Oregon.) I'm not sure it's the best choice for a keeper - it's pretty aggressive and striking when they get too close to the cage.
I advised her to put some hidey things in there for the snake, so maybe it will calm down if it feels less stressed - but still I'm not optimistic about this being a good pet for a little girl - and even if it was... not sure how she'd go about getting it home - seems like more effort than it's worth.

Yay! i can post replys! Well. Flicker prolly tol you about the snake i cought. I'm not going to keep it:( (although i wish i could!) and I im confirming its agressive nature. i'll be posting a hello in the welcome room soon enough:)

Aggressiveness in garter snakes usually goes away fairly quickly. They are just defending themselves.
Once they know you are not a threat and maybe a good food source, they chill out.:)

If it turns into a keeper (Or one of the babies is.) I'd put it in a firmly tied fabric pouch and keep it in a shirt pocket or fanny pack close to me. Most airlines are cool with transporting pets so long as they are properly and safely contained. (Check airline guidelines of course.)
I took Abby with me on a road trip to Pennsylvania and back. She rode in a plastic lock top file box lined with paper towel with a pet dish to hide under and hold water at our destination. She took it all in stride.
*If* she ends up wanting to bring one home, drop me a message and I'll mail her one of my prototype 'Slither Sacks'- I'll put a neck strap on it so she can wear it around her neck and keep her pet safely close to her heart during the trip.

I took one of our most cherished garter snake(Lucky) to Applebee's. While the family ate dinner, Lucky stayed in the backpack right next to me. All the times I checked on her she appeared to be sleeping.
My kids laugh about that all the time. They say she's probably the only garter snake to sit in a booth at Applebee's.:D

It's a disease vector in a place where people eat. To put it harshly.

Indeed they are. although.... for the meantime i need a name :D
and can you tell me if she's gravid?
guidofatherof5
08-17-2010, 06:23 PM
There is no way to tell you for sure if she is or isn't.
It all boils down to the experience of the people telling you and some luck.
If she's a heavy bodied female she may look gravid but not be.
She may also be a thin bodied female that has a small litter.
Only time will tell either way.
Considering the time of the year and her size I say no, but that is just a guess on my part.
That's too bad they don't make E.P.T's for snakes.

She looks a bit like Mama. When I caught Mama she was the BIGGEST garter snake I had ever seen. I thought she was definitely gravid... Turned out that she was just a female ;) Lately, she's been getting fatter every day... Not in a bad way though (I hope she never sees this post! she might bite me for calling her fat!!) She's been eating a lot too.. But don't get me wrong, I absolutely love fat garters ;) Maybe I'll have to get myself a radix one day since Steve has said they're eating machines. I want a garter that's just like me! haha :D

He's over a year old now and about 18 inches. (he was 9.75 inches when I got him) He's far from outgrowing his modest 10 gallon tank. I hear you on the money part but you know, if you wanted one you could always save for it. I got a deal and he was only $75 shipped.
In any case, Steve has perhaps just a few:p normals that are just as wonderful.

Albino or not, if you get a radix it will be special. Some of my best/valuable/nicest radixes came from right outside my front door and are just:rolleyes: normal phase snakes.
Nothing against any other thamnophis but I believe(from my limited experience) radixes live very well with humans and adjust quickly.

Yeah, everybody likes fish gut and slime, right? Anyway Beth, sometimes it just takes a while for them to come around. Sooner or later, every radix learns to love fish pieces and worms at least, then if they eat fish, it's easy to get them eating pinkies. Amy wouldn't touch pinky parts for the first month or so and today chows down on whole pinkies enthusiastically. And worms... and fish... and just about anything I offer him. He was given nothing but rosies for the first 6 months or so of his life.

Sounds like that radix needs a little attitude adjustment, T.radix Ranch style.
We have a little saying here on the Ranch.
“Give us your tired, your poor, your picky eaters
Your huddled radixes yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
Welcome to the T.radix Ranch.
Our front door isn't golden anymore but you get the idea.
