I tried skype a while back and got rid of it in short order. I had too many problems with it. Never worked right and kept freezing my computer.

I had way better experience simply using video chat through yahoo messenger.

That was years ago when I tried it. Like, version one point something. The only webcam I have right now is 10 years old and piece of crap. Paid $100 for that sucker back then. I saw a really good HD webcam for $30 in the sales papers the other day. I think after I get one, I'll try skype again. I know you can do just audio, PC to phone, etc. but I like doing video calls PC to PC. For that, I had much less trouble using yahoo messenger. I'm sure skype has improved since the last time I tried it or else it wouldn't be so popular.

All you need to use skype is a cheap headset.
My webcam is off for most skype calls,
the quality isnīt really good and the video signal is stressing the connection.

ConcinusMan
12-15-2010, 02:18 AM
I have a headset. A good one. If I only wanted to make a phone call, most anyone I would be calling would be right here in the USA. If I want to do that, I'll just use a cell phone.

My webcam is a pretty good one and it only cost 30 dollars. Of course, since I don't have a headset I just use my camera as a mic and use some headphones so people don't have an echo. :D

ConcinusMan
12-15-2010, 07:06 PM
Yes, things have changed a lot in 10 years. you couldn't get even a halfway decent quality picture from a webcam unless you paid at least $100 back then. Of course, a CD burner was over $100 too. I guess it's because no computers shipped with that stuff back then. Once they start shipping with this stuff standard, the price to buy the items drops like a rock.

A DVD rom was $80 and I paid it. CD burner $120. Webcam (crappy by todays standards) $100 on sale. DVD burner $400.

Oh, and what I mean by a headset is a mic and an earpiece. You don't get an echo. You leave your speakers off. Having them on is what causes the echo.

kibakiba
12-15-2010, 09:07 PM
I know what a headset is if you were aiming that towards me. I don't have one simply because I'd rather have the 40-50 dollars cost that one is to go towards snake food or something else to enhance their lives a bit.

ConcinusMan
12-15-2010, 10:16 PM
Dollar store headphones and speakers off is all that is needed to eliminate the echo is all I'm saying. A headset isn't necessary since your webcam has a mic. You just need a way to hear without the sound feeding back into the mic.

I gave this thread a bump. Skype is a great way for forum members to contact(text, voice or video chat) each other and it's completely free.
All you need for the most basic communication is a keyboard. I talk and text members all over the world.
If you don't have free long distance on your home or cell phone this is the way to go.
You will need the following:
* Internet Connection any broadband: cable, DSL, etc.
It's an easy download and even easier installation.

You can type and use just mic on skype. I enjoy being able to talk to Steve often. :D

My boyfriend and I use the mic chat while playing games, because it works better than Steam or MSN.

My skype seems to have a problem sometimes. I had Julio and Rhea on my list once and then they just disappeared. Every time I add people they seem to randomly be deleted off my list, unless they deleted me? I don't know. It saddens me.

Changed my mind, I don't even remember when I last had a conversation on MSN. The one thing it has going for it, is that it saves the conversation history as a file on your hard drive.

Steve what is the advantage over email if using a keyboard? I guess I don't see the advantage of texting the last year or two either since myself and most people I know get email and internet in there pocket via the new phones.
Now Skype with a webcam, I have used that before and it's nice to have video conversation and now that webcams are dirt cheap (I myself have yet to get one though been thinking about it since Skype video went to facebook), but still relatively not a lot of people have webcams yet. I think when webcams come as a stardard peice of equipement built into monitor it will become more widely used. Maybe they already do come built in standard, I haven't shopped computers in the last 2 year since we bought a new one 2 years ago, it's probably already considered archaic, lol.

I guess I like the fact it's instant. No opening a file or program other than opening Skype.
I've never used any other service so I really have nothing to compare it to.
It seems that emails can take seconds, to hours, to days to get to a destination.

Thought I'd give this a bump. Skype has been a real blessing not only as a money saver but it also allows me to keep in touch with friends that mean a lot to me.
Easy to install and use. Free voice and instant text messaging to anyone, any where in the world and it's free.

My skype name is in my signature. I haven't tried using it since the early days (first few versions) and I wasn't impressed. I figured it improved since then so I tried it again about a week ago. It crashed several times the first day I tried to use it. So, don't count on my using it much.
