Today was feed the big snakes day. Everyone ate but I thawed out way too many mice.
My big female garters didn't seem to mind my mistake.
This first photo is of my largest T.s.parietalis(Red-sided garter) Since coming to the Ranch last Fall she has beeb doing great.
She's the one that gave me those(44) albino het. babies.
The second photo is my other T.s.p. female. She's a very strong eater. Hoping she'll breed next Spring.

Note to self. Never stick your wet hand in an enclosure with starved radixes(It had been 24 hours since their last meal)
This is LG(Lucky's Girl) She wasn't the only snake(Enforcer, Tourette and Daisy) to grab my hand but the other let go as soon as they realized it wasn't food.
LG made a point of wrapping around my wrist so that my hand couldn't get away and she repeatedly drove her teeth deeper in if I resisted. When it was apparent she wasn't going to let go I put my hand in the water dish. A few seconds later she changed her mind.
Gotta love a hungry radix.:D

When it's feeding time she goes into a zone. A zone of death for anything in her way.
She's my fighter in the group. She attacks anyone who she thinks has food. Grabs them by the head.
She's been this was since birth.
You wouldn't want to be marooned on an island with this girl.:D

Just like Snap ;) The almost ate Thumbelina, and there wasn't even food in my room, hadn't eaten in 3 days. One of the reasons I keep her alone, that and one on one time... That may happen after the shed. She really just wants to kill anything that moves right now... :D

She is what she is. An overzealous eater.
I'm glad I don't have many of these.
Having one or two in a group is challenging and somewhat fun.

Note to self:
Make sure the Bull Snake is out of feeding mode before trying to pick it up.
I yelled for Gabby who took a couple photos. Then a few squirts from a water bottle and she released.
Thunder didn't set her teeth or do any thrashing(good thing).
Very little blood was drawn. I've had garter snakes do worse.
This is the first time she's ever done this and I have no one to blame but myself.

She's a very big girl. Could have done a lot of damage. I got bit by a wild one close to 7 feet long but it wasn't a feeding response, I was attempting to catch it. I needed 4 or 5 sutures to close the wound.

It was one of those situations where you see the snake unexpectedly (it came up to me) and you're like "OMG, I gotta have that" and you just react like a reflex and grab it. Afterwards I was like... "hmm... maybe that wasn't such a good idea" LoL.

Here's a rather interesting little radix.
She was brought to me by a friend. I kept her but only because I loved her attitude.
She was a normal looking radix baby. Then she poured the color on.
Looks like she needs to take a bath.:D

You've got me curious. What were you thinking?

RedSidedSPR
07-23-2011, 07:34 PM
Well, all your snakes are like that, I really didn't know what, just not that... I guessed aggressive, but you don't seem to like that like tame ones, I had no idea. So I asked.

EDIT: and in "quite different" I mean abnormal, not different than what she is.

guidofatherof5
07-23-2011, 07:40 PM
It's got nothing to do with what I like. :D
It's what they turn out to be while at the Ranch.
It seems all the snakes in my care are easy going.
I have a few feisty ones at feeding time but for the most part everyone is calm here.
I've had my share of mean/scared snakes but they calm down.

RedSidedSPR
07-23-2011, 07:48 PM
Exactly! So I assumed by attitude, you meant not like that, but I gotcha... You meant like that from the start.

Food time can be interesting but outside of that they are all calm, cool and collected.;)

RedSidedSPR
07-24-2011, 06:19 PM
I find that quite interesting...:D I mean, there are a lot of mean radix (and of course other species) but, you don't have any... And you probably have more than anyone... Over 300 radix. You would think you'd have at least one!!

Ok, well my guys aren't mean, necessarily, but would rather be left alone. I did complete tank changes yesterday, so lots of transferring back and forth. No one bit me, none of the garters musked me, but it still wasn't a really pleasant experience for them or I. The young king on the other hand S's up, typically doesn't strike, but will musk me... probably about half the time I get her out, which I do often. Interesting burnt rubber musk. Once out she's fine... but yeah, I still think they need to visit Uncle Steve.

Didymus20X6
07-25-2011, 10:34 AM
By the way, I read a fascinating book once about how the entire story of The Hobbit and LOTR is actually based on words. Even the word Hobbit, for example, was an accident, but Tolkien, being the expert linguist he was, refused to believe that the word was without meaning. The end result: an entire race of faerie-like creatures who sort of embody all that is British in much the same way that Leprechauns embody Irishness. The name Baggins has several connections with the underworld, including a French term that essentially means "ring thief". And the name Gollum is tied to several words, including Goblin, Golem, and Ghoul. (And the story of the Golem itself is a tale about the power of words). And this can be tied to the term Hobgoblin; what is Gollum but a Hob who is a Goblin, and has become a Ghoul on account of the ring? And if that suddenly reminds you of the Nazgul (i.e., "Ring-ghouls"), then you might be seeing my point by now.

RedSidedSPR
07-25-2011, 10:41 AM
That's cool, I love the books too! (although they don't flow like the movie and I rarely make it through the whole thing :p)

But yeah, this has nothing to do with Steves radix, she's right.

RedSidedSPR,
We were discussing why my snakes were so calm and not mean.
Front opening enclosures. They can see me coming right in front of them. None of that coming in from the top stuff.
I think that makes a big difference.

RedSidedSPR
07-27-2011, 08:26 PM
AHHHH..... Hmmm... Guess that makes sense :D yeah, really, I mean, they get used to the top lids, but that would make a difference...

Do you have any top lidded ones that you've noticed the difference in the snakes?

Well, can't do that now, but when all my snakes grow up, im gonna put them all in a nice big front opening cage. Should be awesome.

guidofatherof5
07-27-2011, 08:34 PM
Do you have any top lidded ones that you've noticed the difference in the snakes?

Right now the only snakes I have in top lid enclosures are babies and they are more jumpy than the groups of babies that are in front opening.
Once I get my hand in with them(top lid snakes) they seem to settle down some but I have to be careful not to make any quick movements or the bolt.

RedSidedSPR
07-27-2011, 08:37 PM
I can back that up... That top movement triggers a natural predetorial reaction. :D

The lid sliding on or off, always makes my adult jump. Te babies are calm enough it doesn't bother them, but if I reach my hand over the cage, they jump back...

guidofatherof5
07-27-2011, 08:42 PM
Front opening enclosures and familiarity probably are the two big reasons my snakes are so calm and not mean.
Then comes my pleasant personality and the fact I smell like a garter snake.:D

I have some awesome green radixes on the ranch. Green heads and a tinge of green on the laterals.
This yearling is a different story. The photo doesn't show it but she's green everywhere. Head, laterals and belly.
She is a one-of-a-kind here at the Ranch. Of all the radixes that past through this place I've never seen another one like her.
She's a good eater and will be placed with a group of adults soon. Now to find a male that is worthy of her greenness.:D
This photo doesn't do her justice.
She is also in need of a name. Looks like I'll be posting another "Name that radix" contest soon.

I call this "Having worms on the brain"
This is LG(Lucky's Girl) and LG was taking a nice swim when I tossed a night crawler in as a surprise.
LG was in such a hurry to eat she started to swallow the head and tail of the worm.
This cause a loop in the worm and as you can see quite a conundrum(my new word for the day:D).
It wasn't too much trouble for her as she chewed through the worm and finished it up.
They are such silly snakes.
LG is a beautiful young lady.

We had a beautiful day here so Tank went out for some sun and fresh air.
Before I knew it my son and I were out catching some rays with him. He is so docile.
People just tend to gravitate toward Tank. My neighbors came to the fence to get a look at Tank.
They couldn't believe he didn't bite at us or even care we were so close.

Speaking of Speckle. I saw my big girl out relaxing this morning and notice she seems to be getting wide in all the right places.
If she is they will be Iowa albino hets.

Wow, speckle is beautiful. And the hobby sure could use more outcrossed albinos/hets. Nice work. You just might single-handedly eliminate inbreeding depression in these morphs.

Congrats, Steve. This year has been low in baby garters, it's good to see some fall ones.

I always like it when I get some Fall or Winter babies.
Nice to see that new life when everything else is shutting down for the Winter.

Now I have a question for you Steve. If you dont have them where they hybrenate and I know they will still breed cause ive had that happen a while ago when I had those garters a long time agao. But if you keep them like you do in the summer and winter the same can they still get prego in the winter and have baies at a different time them normal time.

guidofatherof5
09-07-2011, 04:28 PM
Once in awhile I have Fall or Winter babies.
Expecting babies from Speckle in about a month. That would qualify as a Fall birth.
Breeding can take place all year round in captive situations.
It all depends on if the female is receptive and there's a male who's loaded and ready.
If I housed a male with each of my female groups I'd have gravid snakes all year round.

Just flipped through some of the photos you've got on here Steve. And realised what I'm being assimilated into... oh well, we were planning on moving to a bigger house next year.

Great photos, some of the reds you have look fantastic. The reds are natural in the wild, right?

Yes, they are. Not a lot of them out there(that we know of).

Looking at Tank I see a much smaller version of what I have now but the same little turtle attitude.
Other than size he hasn't changed at all. Just as docile and interactive as before.
It will be neat next Christmas to have a 20 lb little buddy around.

This girl is named Speckle. She came from right outside the front door. She was the biggest radix I had ever seen. That was over 2 years ago and she continues to grow. She's not over weight. She just a big girl. She started out being standoffish and kind of a bully. Her first year she lived alone but then I decided to move her in with a group of adult female. It worked wonders as she is now one of me calmest snakes.
http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k501/guidofatherof5/speckle-1.jpgSteve! Speckles daughter Jade is getting huge too! She is in a 20L and I swear she needs to go up a size or two!!

Ohhh, more Daisy pictures! Thank you!
You know I love her brilliant yellow striping, and she and her cagemate 'the Enforcer' both did their best to charm me on my visit to the ranch.

I like that Peachy still has yellow stripes, in addition to that lovely rosy coloring. I hope you can keep or even intensify the contrast between the red and yellow in your red lines.

Thanks for your comments.
Daisy has been a great snake since coming to the Ranch. She fit right in and adjusted quickly.
Enforcer and I have been working on a relationship for 3 years and she finally has accepted me.
It's hard to believe 3 years has gone by. I remember her as a newborn and now she's a monster.
