Sorry Josh, you're not permitted to keep that sub-species in the US. It is totally protected.

To answer your question though they are one of the most costly garters, if not the most. I think somebody said they were a couple thousand in Canada.

I also believe that was Canadian dollars, but still it was indeed very high compared with European prices.

It might just be a dream, but I wish some of those European tetrataenias could make their way over to Canada. A successful breeding program so close to the U.S. would be hard to ignore by those that argue against captive propogation of this endangered species.

Kuno,
This might lead to absolutely nothing, but IF there's a way... I know who could either help you or who could tell you who to contact for the right information. We have a member called "cascabel," who is doing graduate research with wild T.s. tetrataenia in Northern California. I don't know if she maintains any in the laboratory, but if anyone can help you... she can. There's is a slim chance for success, but the rewards would be tremendous! Here's a link to her profile (http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/members/cascabel.html). Try sending her an e-mail, and be sure to include a picture of your babies ;). Best wishes,
Rick
P.S. Just to be clear, she couldn't send you any, but she might be able to put you in contact with the proper authorities.

When I first joined this forum, and was looking back through all the old threads, I read Melissa's posts with interest. It's a real shame we never heard from her again. Maybe she'll come back though. Kuno, if you make contact with her, ask her if she will come visit us sometime!
