I thought maybe we could post some of our snake items we've picked up or created along the way.
This is my daughter(Gabby's) pillow she received from a family friend.

I don't have any snake stuff but I have a onesie with geckos on it and another with chameleons and some stuff with octopi and seahorses. Most of the baby stuff I've been buying has an ocean or jungle theme. I'm sure I'll find something with snakes eventually!

I have some garter snake drawings that I've done, but I cant upload them yet, I have to install my scanner first... once I find the disc :D

ConcinusMan
08-02-2010, 12:41 AM
You don't need the disk. All you need is a driver that is compatible with your operating system and often, the OS already has a driver for it. Often the disk is loaded with garbage you don't need and a driver that is out of date. Most disks that come with hardware such as scanners, never see the inside of my CD drive. They go right in the trash. PM me and I can get help you get it working in no time.

True, but I'm very untrusting of most sites. I guess I could find the manufacturers website and find it there :)

Here's my daughter's "Littlest Pet Shop" snake.
It sure eats a lot less food and never poops in the water dish.

Here's a couple snakes given to me by students. The upper one is a Ty Beanie Baby snake and the bottom one is made of wood.

Sorry about that. Give them a different pose and post them anyway;)
My wooden one has a broken tail so it would be nice to see one posted that is complete. That is, as long as yours doesn't have a broken tail:D

I have two snake-themed inanimate objects right now... A 6 ft rubber Cobra, and a 5 ft bean bag Python. Or, as I like to call them, my Naja rubberensis and Python stuffedus. :D

I almost added a third to the collection last month, but Halloween City's asking price was a little too steep. Maybe next season. :p

This painting was done by one of my former students.
This is our pride and joy "Lucky". The calmest and nicest radix we have.
She was wild caught as a baby and has captured the heart of my family.

Here's a few things that are still works in progress... some of these were practice pieces... I make practice pieces when testing out a new technique as I was with the milk snakes. These are all made of colored polymer clay. I mix all of the colors by hand and yes I painstakingly roll and place each little dot in it's place... and I apply every individual scale one at a time to the ones that are scaled :) A lot of work goes into these, not many people understand the significance of polymer clay artwork that is not painted! I am going to be working on some garters soon :) If anyone is interested in custom orders give me a shout... ;)

Woa, that is incredible!!! I've done some work with polymer clay, and it is so tricky and frustrating sometimes! How long does it generally take you to complete a snake? :) If you don't mind giving away your methods, how do you get the patterns? Do you use a cane-work or do you just cut pieces and smooth them onto the snake?

You don't mind if I use some of your pictures as inspiration, right? :D I'm just beginning, so I'd obviously be no competition. Haha.

It generally takes between 1 and 2 hours for a nice piece, but this rhino took me about 6 hours over the course of 3 days. I have made canes to make repeating saddles on saddled snakes easier, but canes can only go so far. as you roll the snake with the cane slice on it to flatten it in, the cane slice will stretch out so you have to accomodate that into your cane or you will end up with a too-stretched pattern. For the rhino I literally just cut and sliced and rolled every tiny piece! I don't mind sharing with fellow artists... I choose to embrace other's talents and not view them as competition :)

hehehe, you picked all of my favorites! Those are all high end pieces.... my showcase work! But I also make the little king snakes and the chondros and the simpler stuff because it sells well, especially since not everyone wants to spend $70-$100.... and the kingsnakes are appealing even to non-herp owners because of the black and white thing. The Cobra, blood python, the frog, all the pieces like that take a few hours a piece whereas the kingsnakes take an hour or 2 to make a whole batch.... that's why there is a dramatic difference in price! I've learned to have a wide variety of pieces available because some people just want something cute and not too expensive and others want a tiny replica of their favorite species!

Well shoot. Now I'm looking at these and thinking I should have opted for the glossy finish on my concinnus sculpture. Gives them a more "real" look. I was afraid it would make them look too "glassy" but it actually makes them look more real.

aSnakeLovinBabe
12-15-2011, 03:27 PM
well you could always send it back and I will be happy to clear coat it for you! But IMO garter snakes are not glossy... they are rough snakes. I thought it looked sharp as bare naked clay. You could also run to your nearest home depot or whatever store and buy the tiny can of water base varathane diamond. It's small, it's cheap and that's exactly what I use on my work! I always clear coat my small works like the necklace pendants and what not for two reasons- they are pendants so a bit of gloss adds to that jewelry effect, and it also adds strength and durability to the extremely tiny parts like the tails and the eyelashes on my eyelash viper. on a large piece it won't really add any strength as the clay is already so thick. If you notice I always tuck their tails down or wrap them on something. Polymer clay is very tough, especially the grade that I use, it is tough because it's not brittle and won't shatter like porcelain or ceramic would.... it always stays ever so slightly flexible even if you can't really detect it. In fact the glass and stone pieces i put some of them on are way more delicate if dropped than the actual clay itself. I also make sure to condition my clay thouroughly... I fold it over many times on itself before working with it... this triples the strength of the final piece.... If you use the clay straight out of the package you are much more likely to have a failed piece, especially during positioning, when the snake is done being made i have to carefully bend it into shape WITHOUT it fracturing apart... if the clay is not conditioned properly it will actually crack apart if you bend it too fast. And let me tell you nothing would kill me more than having spent hours on that boa or that king cobra and then having it break in half when I was bending it into shape!!!!

How is it torture when they are available for purchase? That's called Temptation!

haha! Well at least the majority of them are. Some of those have already sold and the king snake set was a custom order. The white snake on the black geode actually sold before it was even fired! For some reason those plain white ball pythons are super popular... I think it's because they have that elegant look that will go with just about any outfit.

I did notice my sculpture is a bit flexible. Would that coating stop the flexing or would it cause the coating to fracture? I just think a little shine would make it look more real. Real snakes do look a little glossy especially after a shed.

Don't get me wrong, I love it just like it is, and I get lots of compliments on it regarding the workmanship. People keep saying "wow, she should start a business" that's when I just give them the web address/facebook page.;)

Hehe.... thanks!!! The clear coat will not really stop the flexing, and no the flexing should not affect the clear coat either. At least I have never seen that happen! But then again... I don't make it a habit of flexing my pieces and I would recommend just not flexing it. for obvious reasons. LOL!!! if you flex it enough it WILL break!! But that teensy weensy bit of flex is what might save it if you ever drop it! I have dropped my graybanded king bangle twice and it was not affected.
