Picked this snake up, it was found about 200 miles south of the Oregon border, roughly 20 miles from the coast in California. Trying to figure out which species it is, they thought it was infernalis but don't believe it is.

Looks gravid, whatever it is.
Beautiful snake.

Inferalis was my first guess, but I'm far from an expert, especially compared to you guys. If it is indeed gravid, the babies will hold the answer.

wow... it's weird! That's not an infernalis though... the red is in the wrong places! If it was an infernalis it would have red up higher above the laterals. It looks like an albino flame... but obviously... it isnt. Are you at least able to narrow it down to sirtalis or elegans scott? it looks like a sirtalis to me. Could it be a fitchii??? Seriously though, if it's from that range it very well could be an intergrade!

Very interesting! My original thought was elegans, maybe Thamnophis elegans terrestris. Fitchi did cross my mind but fitchi usually has cleaner lateral stripes........................

I will stick with elegans.

Very cool either way!

Cool looking snake Scott. It almost has to be T. elegans terrestris don't you think? but they seem to all be highly variable out there.
I would guess if this snake were albino it might look similar to that. Shrug your guess is as good as anyones. Like Steve said she might be gravid and if she has babies that might be helpfull in ID.

I would say t e terrestris.... due to the red coloration and where it was found. terrestris have nice red phases out there. there was one found a few years back, but the owner flaked on me, was gonna do a breeder loan with my female, but never heard back from him. was a little male.

sweet snake!!!

In an earlier thread I thought I understood that there was no such thing anymore as T.e.terrestris?? Am I wrong or only confused??:o The thread is: http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/general-talk/7061-t-elegans.html?highlight=terrestris

Thanks to Joe P for his due diligence in helping to ID this species. The top portion is super clean, much like an Iowa albino plains and the bottom part has quite a bit of orangish/red color, color and pattern seems to be indicative of terrestris.

Thanks again JP, lets hope she pops some healthy neonates !
