The grapevine is working well in my area. I called a guy that had an albino garter snake for sale. He said that he caught it in his yard about a year ago. He said he had been feeding it night crawlers and toads. He said that it had shed 3 times since he had it. I asked his how much he was wanting for it. He said his sister did some research and told him he should ask $650.00!!!!!!!!!!!!...............
I explained to him how that was probably not obtainable. We settled on a greatly reduced price. I drove to his house and found this handsome male T.radix. He's going to be a busy young man in the coming year:D
I like being retired:D

Wow. Awesome! Yet another wild-caught albino. Amazing. Looks like Iowa strain. He's got some nice orange, starting to color up on his sides. Amy is too, a little bit.

Here's a couple better photos of this new male albino T.radix
I'm looking forward to introducing him to a few of my ladies this late Fall and once again in the Spring.
He wasn't brumated last Winter so I'm not sure if he's in the mood.
He''s probably in the mood:D

Thats very cool Steve. Where was he caught? because he definately has a more T- look like the "Iowa" strain

ConcinusMan
07-26-2010, 01:35 PM
You think so? close call. I mean, he does look a little different but I wouldn't say he's definitely T positive. Of course, I don't really much experience in these matters either. Maybe this is a different strain altogether. I hope steve breeds him to an Iowa or het Iowa as well as whatever else he plans, just to see if this is compatible.

The yellow head and orange-ish back is pretty cool but his eyes are awfully red (pink) for a T positive I would think.

Outside, Jeff:D.

10 miles from the Missouri border, in Iowa.

Notice how he didn't give up the county name? That's a lot of state line to cover. Not that I would fly there to go trudging around for snakes.;)

Richard you stay the heck out of Iowa or Steve will have you arrested for loitering, which is a felony with the possibility of 5 years in a federal pound you bleep bleep bleep prison, ever see the movie Office Space? Just joking around.
Richard I think you misread my post, I wrote that Steves snake looks T-......that's tyrosinase minus, and you were argueing that it doesn't look T+, I agree.
"Iowa strain" is T-
"Nebraska strian" is T+
or at least that is my oppinion and the general consencus from talking with others.
I would be surprised if the wild caught albino snake that I got this summer isn't compatible with the current Nebraska strain and I would also be surprised if Steves new wild caught albino isn't compatible with the current Iowa strain, but who knows until we do the breedings and prove it out, but hey that's part of the fun and excitement; discovering the unknown, uncharted waters.

ConcinusMan
07-26-2010, 10:08 PM
Oh, didn't catch the " - " and thought you meant T positive. I think he's just a really good looking Iowa. Just an opinion of course.

Jeff B
07-26-2010, 10:14 PM
So yeah, I think we all agree that it looks like a very clean, pink eyed T- minus, like the current Iowa strain, however I will say that I see a bit of orangish on the upper sides background color. The blueish checkers and bright light lemon yellow however is pretty typical for the Iowa look.

ConcinusMan
07-26-2010, 10:19 PM
Well I think that the minor differences could be attributed to other genes from wild snakes contributing to his look. Amy is actually starting to change color just a bit in the same area you mentioned. It is turning a little more orange-ish instead of the bright lemon yellow. I even noticed some single scales on her side that turned that color.

I forgot to ask, will this snake be bred to one of Rita's babies?

guidofatherof5

I forgot to ask, will this snake be bred to one of Rita's babies?

Probably not since she was the Nebraska albino strain. Later maybe to produce some duel hets.

ConcinusMan
07-29-2010, 11:10 AM
That would be cool. Amy (iowa albino) is also het for nebraska. Some of her siblings were nebraskas. Anyway, the little male Iowa I just recently got is also het for nebraska. So, if I pair these two up in the future there's a chance of producing both types in the same litter.

The new male is doing well. Saw him eat for the first time. He's spending more and more time outside his hide.
Next week starts his initiation process. Working towards a well behaved, loving radix.
I just hope he's very loving to the girls.:D bow chika bow bow :D

Riverton shed today. He has some socialization issue I need to work on. I don't think he's been held much and is pretty wary of me.

you must have a smoother life than me, Steve, because I use the word awry quite a bit
yours is probably more like Stefan's
his is the same damn thing every day, whereas mine is "one damn thing after another" just like Mark Twain's

just got to this thread after many delays, and since I read it all from beginning to end I'm still curious as to what percentage of the original asking price you coughed up
he is a lovely animal for an albino

$100.00 was the price we settled on. I think it was a good deal.

I think it's a good thing to get new wild albinos. It may help strengthen the captive bloodlines and improve the sometimes poor fertility and failed litters. $100 is a pretty good deal for that beautiful specimen.

I was glad this guy wasn't listening to his sister about the price to set on the snake. He would have been sititing on that snake for a long time at $650.00
He was a nice guy who took good care of the snake while he had it. I of course told him to keep me in mind for any others he finds.

Albinos eyes always look kind of creepy... Evil looking almost!

ConcinusMan

It's the red eyes for sure. At least you can see the pupil on that one. The "evil" effect is even more creepy when you can't distinguish any pupils. Muuuuahahaha! I think that any snake in shed that has completely cloudy eyes (you can't see the pupil) looks pretty creepy too.

Indeed. When Snap or Ember are watching me it still creeps me out because they are the first snakes that I've seen who move their eyes. My ordinoides never do. Sometimes it looks like Ember is kind of "high" when he's resting or sleeping... his eyes go all weird haha. I wish I could get a good picture of it. It looks sort of like he's looking up, but the way his head s positioned its funny looking. :D

Yes, he lives in a small town.
He took care of him for a year then decided to sell. I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.
I've got 4 ladies lined up for him this Spring. I hope he's up to the task.
All four were born and raised here on the Ranch.
They are very nice females. He's a lucky guy.:D

Amelanistic snakes are rare in the wild, because their carmouflage don´t work very well, and did you imagine all those peoble who´ve never seen a snake although the snakes might live in their yards?

I feld lucky when I saw a baby Natrix (too fast for a picture) last summer although I knew the place to be Natrix habitat and a friend, who lives nearby had several specimens on vacation in his pool.

Just like in the hobby, with some species such as this one (T. radix) amelanistic individuals are not so rare, even in the wild. This is isn't the only one caught in the wild, it isn't even the second or third one found in the past year or two. And then, there's probably ones found we didn't even hear about.

Udo does have a point though. I have been herping around Oregon for many years and not once have I found a ringneck snake in that state, even though I've been looking where they are apparently very common.

I do know of two more. Some fellow Deputies said they saw one when they served search warrant on a residence. They said the home owner said he caught it.
Last year I also heard about another one just across the river in Omaha.

you see? not so rare. Now, that albino Northwestern found this year is only the second one found in decades that I know of.
