Rudolph is the son of Nova. As he develops he gets more red. Nova's red influence is scene in many of her babies from last year. Rudolph is the enclosure leader among his siblings. It will be another year, maybe 2 before Rudolph is ready to start his new job:D but when he does I have high hopes he'll do a great job of passing on that redness.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Radix : Lyrics
Rudolph, the red-nosed radix
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.
All of the other radi
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any radix games.
Then one foggy Feeding eve
Guido came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you eat my pinkies tonight?"
Then all the radi loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed radix,
you'll go down in history!

Perhaps it is. Soon I'll be receiving a pair of Iowa albino babies that were produced by breeding with a high red like Rudolf. I am told that many of the babies, albino and regular, do "color up" like that.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness.
Seems to fit as I lost(got loose) Rudolph sometime last night. This morning when I went to put his group back I found him missing. I felt terrible as I have such big plans for that young man. This afternoon I walked into the big snake room and spotted him on the floor. He gave a merry chase but I won in the end. He's now in lockup for 24 hours(just kidding)
Now to the real reason for this post.
While I fed Rudolph and his band of merry radixes I notice he(Rudolph) was a rather dominating snake. He was aggressively eating but he was also well aware of what was going on in the enclosure. As he was grabbing for a piece of worm a fight broke out on the other side of the enclosure and he headed for that location as he passed by the food dish simultaneously grabbing a bite of food. He rushed to the fight but by the time he got there it was over. Then he heard a fight breakout under the hide. He almost did a flip trying to get to the hide to see what was going on. He was all over the place like a pinball but at no time did it seem out of control.
I like his attitude.

I guess he figures if there's something worth fighting over, he wants a piece of that! BTW, that entire group is some good looking radixes. I love the one's with spots that contrast with the background color. Very nice.:D

Rudolph continues to color up and grow.
I'm hoping he will be ready to breed this Spring.
I would love to have a nice, large litter of red radixes.
I'll even take a small litter.:D

Once you get that darn teleporter working you are welcome to come to the Ranch whenever you want.
I'll even send a few(dozen) radixes home with you.:D

This is great Steve! You having some fine red radixes to breed sure is good news for the hobby. If you are ever willing to let some of the babies go eventually, that is.
I would love to have a pair myself.

It's been awhile since I posted anything about this wonderful male.
He continues to color up and now is getting some great yellow coloring on his neck and lower laterals,
I'm also seeing his red bleeding into his lateral stripe.
This is one sharp male. Hoping he will breed back to his mom(Nova) this Spring.
It's been a long wait and I hope this pairing will produce some awesome red radixes.

I've had two redradixes leave the Ranch in the last month already.
Both went to the east coast.
I may have 3 others available this Spring, maybe.

Hey, when you prepare night crawlers like that do you not squeeze out the poop or that black stuff that is inside the worm?
I heard it may be beneficial, what are your thoughts?
I always squeezed it out

Last night I fed this group of snakes.
The first snake out was Rudolph and I was taken back at how handsome this male has and is becoming.
He must have just shed. His yellow is getting so bright and his red is awesome.
This is one special red radix male. Wow.

I used to squeeze it out, but the snakes actually rejected them more often than if I left it in. This was when they were cut up, of course. Mama like the worm poop a lot... Hah.

Rudolph just shed and I finally captured his true color in a photo. He is a stunning male T.radix (Plains Garter Snake). The yellow/orange on his neck is striking.
He is at breeding age/size and will be put to work come Spring.
The second photo shows the red on his body but also shows one of his sisters. She too has some red influence on her head, just a few red dots.
Within this group there is a great range of red. A few are developing a beautiful brick red color. (Photos to come)
Sorry about the dirty fingers. I was spreading a little Christmas eve cheer to some of the snakes (Yes, those darn Northwesterns) :D
