I was so happy to find this forum just for garter snake lovers! I had always wanted a snake and had been trying to decide what kind to get when my nephew told me he was getting rid of his snake and did I want it. It was a WC garter and I had never really considered a garter, but decided to give it a go. Man, am I glad I did!!! I absolutely love my little guy (at least I think it's a guy:), he is sweet natured, curious and lots of fun to watch. I have done lots of reading on this forum on how to care for them and much to my dismay my nephew (he is just a kid) had been doing just about everything wrong. Sand substrate, goldfish feeding (shudder) and the like. I quickly bought him a large cage, put down papertowel substrate, gave him a bowl of water, a hide, and a branch for climbing and crawling on. I'll also be buying him a heat light next pay check and I've started feeding him pinkies, which thankfully he took with no problem, although I think he is big enough to eat fuzzies, My concern at this point, is will the effects of eating those crappy fish work themselves out now that he is eating right, or is it a case of once they eat them they never get rid of thethiaminase? I don't know if it makes any diffrence but he is a Western Terrestrial Garter Snake and he is about 23 to 24 inches long. Thanks for any help or advice, I will really appreciate it!!!

welcome to the forum
to my understanding the thiaminase does not stay in the system long, and if your little buddy is on a good diet now, he should be fine
it's nice that he's taking rodents readily
congrats

Thank you all for your welcome, I appreciate it! I am (hopefully) attaching a pic of my baby and a couple of pics of his/her tail. Is it a boy or girl? I hope it's a boy because I named him Murdock (love the A-Team!)

I'm in the Boise area, nice to see another Idahoan! I'm originally from Texas but I really like Idaho and have no intention of ever moving! :)

Hey, that makes you the second fin I saw today. The last one was on a fish as it was going down the throat of one of my snakes.:p

As far as I'm concerned, you qualify as a Finn, if you are or were a Finnish citizen. :p

The man does build very nice housing for his snakes, I wish he lived a lot closer so I could hire him to build a few for me.

Yes Robert I am a temperature wimp! I come from a long proud line of TM's. Knowing that if I find some shade it will actually be cool there, and not just a darker shade of hot, does my heart good! So while I do miss Texas on occasion, you couldn't blast my cool shade lovin' butt outta here with a bid ole stick of dynamite! :D :D :D

The bitty little town of American Falls, which doesn't even have a pet store. It is a one stop light town! LOL
But it is bigger than the other two closest towns, Aberdeen & Rockland.
