Today my parietalis female died in horrible convulsions. I cut her up immediately and inside her was 6 babies - three is dead (they had almost the same convulsions as the mother, but can't say if it's the same as she suffered from). Three is still alive - pray for them.
Although I'm not completely sure of the mothers diagnosis - let this be a reminder that you use only safe fish without thiaminese.Apparently heating to 80 degrees and supplementing with mice isn't always enough.
The male is together with new girls at my friend's house - I hope he will make some nice new babies.
With a tear in my eye,

Sorry for your loss dude, but that is pretty amazing that you were able to cut her open and save the 3 babies, she must have been trying to give birth, I wouldn't be so quick to chalk up diet or thiaminase as cause of death, animals and even humans die trying to give birth due to complications, pregnancy can be a risky proposition. Hoping for the best for the 3 survivers.

Thank you every one.
This morning all three are still alive. I took some pictures. Enjoy.

Two is left. Think the prognose is bad, they won't eat a mixture of mice and fish.

It's still early in the eating game for them. Give them some more time. They may surprise you.

Sorry about momma. Excellent thinking on your part to save those very pretty babies. They look very well developed and I'd say they have a great chance of making it. Like Steve said, it's early. They still have yolk reserves. Most babies I've had didn't eat until 7-14 days old and they were fine.
I don't think it was thiaminase. That's a progressive disease that usually shows it's signs long before death.

I'm so happy to inform you that today one of the three has eaten 4 very small alive guppies. Can't describe how proud I am. Hope the last two will follow.
And yes, they are all well developed. I think the mother died in a combination of the convulsions and trying to give birth. The last 12 hours before her death she did a lot of pressing. But I think the was too weakened. I pray that the babies will make it and be my memory of the beautiful mother. I feel guilty that I didn't put her to sleep before - so that she didn't have to go through all the pain, but then again... I probably wouldn't have been able to safe the three babies then.

And yes... I know that I wrote that one is dead, two is left. I counted the "dead" one a loss, because it was lying halfway on it's back... But it has recovered and shed now:)
