Ivomec as a dewormer?

Ok guys off the wall question here. I was wondering if ivomec could be used for snakes. It's most often used for cows and dogs. It is not FDA approved for birds, but I have been using it safely for 2 years now at a dosage of .10 for a pigeon. I know if I were to attempt it i'd have to decrease the dosage to something like .05 or .04. i figured if i were to use that i would inject it into the FT mouse thus the snake gets wormed. I wanted to ask you all before I entertain the idea any further.

I agree, I wouldn't take advice on this matter from anyone other than a vet. Maybe someone has used this and has been successful but I would still check with a vet first.

The standard de-wormer prescribed by vets for herps is "pancur"

None of the vets in my city or the other adjacent cities have anyone who is well versed in reptiles. I was wondering if anyone had tried this before. I have learned that those devoted to the care of specific kinds of animal know alot more than someone who has a general idea. I would trust info from the experienced owners on this site waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay beofre I took advice froma vet who only deals with cats and dogs. What are some thoughts on this? i mean I use it for my birds (pigeons, pheasants, finches) and birds are pretty fragile. I'll continue to look for a herp specialist there has got to be one in Montgomery or Birmingham

My Vet. just called. He said that Ivomec is a very harsh drug and can't be dangerous to use on reptiles.
He said that he has heard of it being used but that he recommends Panacur as it has less risks to the patient.

Yes I did and you are right.

Steve thanks man!!!! You always have an answer for my questions. I'll take your advice. None of my snakes show any sign of infestation...good poops...good weight. I just wanted to know a little something about it in case I ever run into the prob. Thanks so much!

Not a problem, sorry for the typo. Thanks Wayne for cleaning up my mess.

If I may suggest something. You made the comment "good poop". A garter snake with parasites may have good looking(normal) poop. A fecal float will determine if parasites are present.
You might get one done just for the peace of mind it affords. My Vet charges $35.00 for them. That's why I'm going to invest in the equipment needed to do it myself.
