View Full Version : Jelly Bean...?

:confused::confused::confused:
I found something really strange in my aquarium with my pregnant garter. It looked like a piece of salmon, but it was more pinkish/peacish (kinda like the color of a pinky), and wasn't transparent like the salmon.
I had fed the male that's in there a couple of pinkies two days ago, with some salmon. My first thought was that he might have regurgitated one But that would have meant the salmon would have to have come up first, and I couldn't find that.
I haven't seen anything like it in two years of ownership, and the camera I use to take close up's in broken for the moment. So would you guys happen to have pictures of what Jelly Beans look like so I can compare?
Thanks in advance. :)
For reference it's day 69 since I witnessed copulation.

Did it look anything like this? This one got rolled over a few time before I found it. This is a jelly or slug.

Looks like it could be... How long do they drop them before the rest come?

I pulled it out of the trash can, and it had turned to a brown color. is that typical?

I don't understand the question:confused:He wants to know how long it will take for the rest of the litter to come after she dropped the slug.

However long it takes to deliver all inside. My experience has been they come out at the same rate as anything else being delivered.

Could she throw a slug now and still have full developed healthy babies at a later date, or is it once one comes they all come?

I have found that once the contractions start they continue until everything is out. Granted, that can be a long time frame. As much as 48 hour. I've never had a jelly thrown and then a month or even a week later the snake delivers the rest.
This is of course just my experience with mostly radixes.

Thanks for clearing up my statement jere000 :)
That would have been my next statement Thomas :)
Next newbie question...
What does a contraction look like in a snake?
And,
Do I have to tell her how to breath?
P.S. the last one was in jest. :)

Watch this video. You'll see some contractions.

You would be correct, I see now. I don't see that type of deep breathing going on in my snake though. :(. I hope it's not just one jelly bean, that would be very disappointing. ..

That's not breathing. That's muscular contractions pushing each baby to the cloaca. Her breathing is separate from that.

I guess I could remove the hide she's got her rear end in... and the male. Since she's been spending her time on the heater side, he's been spending his time on top of her. LOL

He didn't like that. He's about to go into shed so his eyes are completely blue, I tapped him and he about jumped out of his skin.

Most of the time their attitudes do change when they are in the opaque stage.

I second your opinion of their attitude change. I just got musked by the male, when I pulled him out of the tank. I've never been musked by this guy in two years.. lol

Remember, we need photos of all babies as soon as possible.
I hope you don't have too long a night with that mom.

Is this your Puget female? If so, then we definitely need pictures ASAP! Congrats! Hope everything goes well!

One last question if you don't mind. Do contractions stop? I switched cages for a second to clean out any remaining gunk that was in it, and put her back in it. However now it doesn't appear that she isn't contracting anymore...

I don't think it's out of the question that she may have some control over the contractions. For short periods of time, escaping predators, moving to a safer location.
I try to handle my delivering females as little as possible. The less stress the better.
I had one big female radix that kept climbing into my arms while she was delivering. I'd put her back and she'd come right back over to me and up on my arms. I thought it was pretty cool. Caught a couple babies in my hand as they were delivered.

Steve thanks for all the help. If you ever make it to a St. Louis Reptile show let me know, I'd like to meet you sometime.

That one is on my list but I never seem to have the gas money for the trip. I drive a 1 ton, 15 passanger van for my big family. Makes road trips expensive.
I would like to meet you also.:)

I think it would be cool if some of the members in the area formed a garter alliance or something. Pooled together and got a table to spread awareness about garters and exhibit some of our unique animals.

Sorry I missed the question last night. Yes this was in reference to my Puget female. I'm pretty sure she's torturing me. Now she's not displaying any of the signs she was last night. I thought what was laying in there was a jelly bean, but I could be wrong I guess....

I would, but the camera I use to take close up pictures is at Best Buy getting repaired...
I wish I knew what the typical gestation period for a Puget was, because that would help here, but I haven't get any specific time periods.

I know that WA T. s. concinnus (another sirtalis living about 90 miles to the south of Puget Sound) gestate at least 100 days, sometimes up to 120 days, whereas T. ordinoides in the same area usually pop within 90 days.

I think you told me that before. I guess it was just a bowel movement I saw last night then. Darn
ConcinusMan

Yeah, I'm going through that right now with a nearly due gravide ordinoides female. A little weird behavior, some twitching, tail lifting, this must be it, and then....
POOP!:p
bkhuff1s
06-05-2010, 10:23 PM
I feel you on that, my girl hasn't been able to sit still for a while now. Definitely tail lifting going on here. I know I saw what looked like muscle contractions... drama queen. lol

Yeah. Like the pregnant woman that wants to draw attention or change the subject. All she has to do is embrace her belly and make a grunting noise.
That ordinoides girl I speak of, can't possibly be too far away. And, for the first time she has refused food the past 2 days. Oh wait, she just burped. Now she's begging. Figures. :p
But seriously, when very gravid, it can look like having a bowel movement, or only passing ureates, seems to take a lot of effort and drama. That's pretty much normal. A lot of pressure on those organs from the growing babies ya' know.

After she was done torturing me, I gave her some salmon. She ignored it for a good half hour till I moved it to the water. Then ate it. I took the heat out from under it as well, just in case she did have babies it wouldn't cook them.
