:(As I was riding my bike a couple days ago i came across a cat. In the cat's mouth was a snake. Being an owner of a snake I felt that I didnt want the snake to be eaten. I scared the cat and it dropped the snake. The snake slithered to the side of the path. I looked at it for a while and it was still squirming. I picked it up because after about 15 minutes of examining it from a short distance I noticed it was an all black Garter Snake with a dark gray underside. I looked at it and it made me wonder. - Are there all black garter snakes in Georgia- By the time i texted ChaCha to ask them they said there were many different Garter Snakes in Georgia. I looked at the snake once again and it stopped moving. I knew that it was dead. I picked up leaves and placed them over its body. I placed a stick in the ground in front of it and thought to my self - What if that had been Zippy (my garter)- Has anyone ever had a simular experience? What did you do differently?

Doesn't sound like a garter snake to me. melanistic eastern garters are all black, belly and all, with a white patch on the chin

depends on size of the snake. juvenile black racers are not black, they have blotches along the back and a fair amount of speckling on the belly. a pic would have been nice. there are unicolored species, worm snakes, earth snakes, black rats, black racers, etc etc.

@infernalis : just curious. how old is Toby? nice looking specimen.

He's growing like a weed. I have seen young racers chasing cricket frogs across our driveway. Racers don't mess around, they just go for it. Steady diet of pinkies or does Toby eat other types of food as well?

Steady pinks, stubborn little guy demanded live Anoles for the first two months, then Anole scented pinks, then unscented pinks.

Now I can sit 4 pinks in a dish, and within 30 minutes, the dish is empty.
